Hi, i recently replaced the coolant tempature sensor and the fan coolant sensor switch in my 02 passat tdi, just noticed when the car is running even after 30 mins, it doesnt seem to rise over 70 celcius, is the car giving false readings? should it always be at a steady 90 degree celcius when at full opperating tempature?

The thermostat is probably stuck open. Very common issue with them.

Happened my 02 Audi A4 also with same symptoms as op. Probably the same part.

Also the heat from vents was poor

Is the car up to full heat from vents in 3-5 minutes of driving and do they stay hot?
If so than I wouldn't be sure it's stat.
Can't really test stat without removing it

vents are hot after about 5 or so mins but the tempature gaudge sits at 70 and never goes to 90

Strange. I know you replaced the temp sensor but it still could be this.
If you know somebody with VAG-COM or VCDS diagnostic tool you could complete an output test to see it the gauge is OK. You can also read the coolant temp directly from sensor as opposed to gauge.
