The never stopped when the accident happened. By the time I had the stopped he was gone.
I turned around and I found driving around the town I live in. HE OFFERED 50 EURO to get it fixed.

It was my mother's car I was driving

Get a second hand one from a scrap yard, you might get lucky and pick one up in the same colour otherwise you may have to either see if the colour housing of the existing one can be used or get the newer one painted.

A brand new one from Opel will cost a lot more than €50.

I was thinking of claiming off his insurance. The never stopped. I have a witness that seen it all. As she was coming out to the main road

Well that is an option for you too.

It wouldn't be the seem shade though. You would still need to colour match it. It's a metallic black

New one from Opel would need to be painted too.

I do have his reg of the car and his policy number. He had some young lad with him telling me to sling my hook

You'll be hard pressed to find a second hand wing mirror in the scrap yard as they seem to go the minute they come in.
I broke one on my old polo and couldn't find one in any of the scrappies.
Ended up getting it new from kc products for 60 quid. Their online prices though are a lot higher than if you go and ring them! :)
If it's colour matched to your car it will cost a lot more than 50 quid.

The garage I would deal with seems to only buy main dealers parts

The insurance company is closed to report the accident till tomorrow

Tell your insurance and if you're not happy with his behaviour, claim off his insurance. Also tell the guards as he didn't stop and he should have.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

i told him he should of stopped as he fled the scene of the Accident. I told the guard What happened but the station isn't open till mid week.

poor reponse by the guy saying it was only a tip and he was in a hurry

If he won't pay the full amount claim off his insurance, se happened me one morning on the way to work, he was doing about 60 so no chance of trying to catch up to him. I ended up just needing new class and a new backing (got the whole lot new for 50) glass from micks garage, backing from main Opel dealer. Is there any of the mirror left?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

the mirror in broken, i have the back part which well need to be resparyed. The housing is also cracked.

Also it is an electric mirror wires plugged into it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,968 ✭✭✭blindside88

Just had a look on micks garage, it looks like you can get one for €81 but you'd need to have it sprayed. Get a price off a panel beater to have it sprayed and tell yet man you want the full cost or you're going through insurance. Can't see it being too expensive to have it sprayed

I bought one for a H model astra recently, think it was €160 plus vat from opel.

I agree with above advice, claim off his insurance, and inform the gardai that he failed to stop.

yeah, I guess the way to look at these thing is that it could have been a lot worse Cena. Feck it, dont let it put up in bad form.

Just inform his and your insurer, and let them sort it out. Get them to manage it, and to contact you when resolved so you can book it into an opel garage for a new colour coded mirror to be fitted.

Thats what you pay insurance for at the end of the day.

    all the best.

yes, you need to inform your own insurer, and let them chase him down - but youll need to keep on top of them to get it sorted. Keep a note of who you speak to, date and time, the claim ref no etc. Then ring them every day till its sorted.

Ok I'll wait your man rings back with the quote. He said it well be around half 11. There short staffed. He may do the job over night. He has done the job for family before.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 3,347 ✭✭✭No Pants

Who is calling you back? Is this the garage or the chap who broke your mirror?

If the latter, make sure you're happy with the quality. You are not obliged to accept a shoddy repair or replacement.

You don't need to wait for a quote to ring your insurance.

Ring them now and report it.

It would be the garage. The chap just walked off after I found him. He didn't care what he did.

You have to ring your insurance company, they have to chase his insurance company, no guarantee on his insurance company paying out though, lucky for you that you have an independent witness i.e not a passenger in your car, it will probably turn out that it is your word against his though, happened me last year, she fled the scene, i followed her and got her reg, she denied it but i reported it to guards, i had to put it through my insurance and they tried to get money back but 10 months later she decided she would claim against me for a mirror probably so I would back down, which i just did, i can live with the loss but hell was i having a claim against me on my insurance for her mirror!!! (nothing wrong with it after she hit me though)Karma will play its part eventually on her i hope. Mirror cost 500 euro (vw golf) i had to pay 150 and go with a garage approved by my insurance company. also had my no claims bonus protected thankfully.

I rang my insurance company. Gave them details etc. Have to wait till I speak the guard on Wednesday give him the details and I have to ring the guys insurance company too after I have spoken to the guard.

My policy doesn't cover me for wing mirror damage.

The fecker better pay up. For a guy that didn't know the road he should of been goinb alot slower. Very bendy road he was on

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭Rose35

His insurance company are not going to pay out because you say they should, he is their client, they will listen to his side of the story, assessors will be sent out to photograph road and if there is no white line on road it can be considered 50/50, the guards will contact him to get his version of the story aswell.

Cena, be sure to tell your insurer that he has admitted liability by offering €50 to fix your mirror.

Just speaking in anger. I do know they well send out someone to look.

Very hard to call. Him admitting liability to you means nothing if he denies it himself later. Do you have any proof it was his fault? What's stopping him saying you clipped him and he didn't notice and drove on?

I had the same thing happen to me early this year when on a narrow but straight stretch of road a car swerved in front of me and even though I pulled in as far as possible, clipped by mirror and smashed it. Both of us pulled up and when I asked the driver why the hell she swerved out into the middle of the road the response was "because there was mud on the side of the road at that point". She then proceesing to ask me to repair her mirror. Nothing I could do though as no independent witness and unlined road!

I replaced the mirror with a generic equivalent I got online for €120 (price for genuine Ford product was north of €250). The bolt to attach it to the door was bigger than the original so had to bore out the door for it to fit. Everything was fine for a couple of months until I noticed the mirror shook on a rough surface - the hinge on the base is completely loose and shakes all over the place. Moral of the story if you can, get the person at fault to replace with a branded new mirror irrespective of the price differential - not your fault it happened in the first place.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

Because parts of his mirror where on the road.

    Witness can confirm as well

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭Rose35

He might try and claim on your insurance for new wing mirror, some people are spiteful when you try and claim on his, lucky you have a witness, witness will have to make a statement aswell, hope it works in your favour, i know it is most annoying when you are in the right.

He doesn't have the reg of the car or my policy number. He just walked away after a min or two.

neither did the woman that took my mirror off, but her insurance company had my details because i was claiming off them, its the insurance companies that end up fighting against each other for compensation on our behalfs, just giving you a heads up, sounds like he won't give in easy

yes its an admission alright but he wanted a quick fix and hopefully you would go away, the guard was on my side when i reported my incident but he said it all boils down to the insurance companies in the end, he fled the scene of an accident, make sure you stress this to the guards that you had no choice but to follow him to get the reg, the guard i was dealing with me said technically i left the scene of the accident too but understood i had to in order to get the reg, she admitted she hit me too but that i hit her aswell, blah blah blah, you have a witness, i didnt, make sure they make a statement on your behalf.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

The guard I rang on his personal mobile knows the witness. Etc. I couldn't really leave the car on the road as it was near a bad bend

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 566 ✭✭✭Rose35

Road I was on had no white line and was narrow but she just sped by me and kept going, as I was following her she put the foot down and went even faster, i knew id catch up to her at a major junction which I did, now thats what i was up against, a hopeless situation, she just acted dumb!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

I got the quote this morning.
    539.64.

Rang the guys insurance company. They have to write out to him. So I have to leave it till mid week till I ring them back to see how things are gong.

They are not even sending anyone out to look at the mirror

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

I rang the insurance crowd agin for an update. Told me the witness didn't see what happened. I do understand as it been at a junction. But she did say he was speeding and never stopped. She has to send in some firms etc

the guy is going to contest thing. What does this mean?

It doesn't look good. They are getting back to me later in the week

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭magentis

Take a look on ebay,i got a mirror there for my astra h.
you can buy the caps there pre-painted too.
It might be time to just get the mirror fixed and move on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,073 ✭✭✭✭cena

Went a panel beater up the road about the mirror. He rang up a place about a second hand mirror. €50 +10 to deliver. €20 to repaint the part if needs it. So around 100 in all.

He thought the quote I got was way too dear. And he deals with the guy I got the quote from

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,249 ✭✭✭magentis

Probably the best option, the exact same thing happened to me.
I knew i was on the right side of the white line but the scumbag that hit me was just a lying ba$tard.

Ya it seems the best option. Big difference to 540. These lads do a great job. Family run. Went to school with two of them
