My advice would be to get it checked out by a garage ASAP. It might be just a belt on the power steering (if belt driven) or in needs of some fluid.

One of my relatives had noise in an opel corsa on steering, turned out that it was electric steering and was lucky it didnt end up in an accident. Not sure if Seat Altea has elec steering or not (someone else might be better informed).

Check the power steering fluid level.

It happened me a few years ago OP and it turned out there was a small leaj in a pipe and the power steering fluid was escaping. Was a handy and cheap fix actually for my mechanic. Changed the pipe which he picked up at the scrapyard.

Just check your power steering fluid first as it's easy to see if that's the problem.

Check fluid and then do a few full lock to lock movements on the spot. That should bleed any air out of it.

thought being electrical the power steering fluid wouldnt need to be done, just did a search and is seems to be a sealed for life thing. theres no power steering fluid to top up.. i hate anything sealed for life. there must be a way.

just checked them, all good, this is a worry now as dont want to end up in ditch but dont want a 1k bill for a steering rack this close to xmas either ffs. anyone know where i might pick up a used steering for mk5 gti/gt 2.0 tdi chassis as those part no's match this.

Oh. If it's an electric power steering system, I have no idea.

Actually doesn't look to bad price wise, ebay breakers are looking for eu177.95 for the rack and pump, the deal breaker is postage, but it does look encouraging.

I guess a new one would be at least double that, which would be fine if I can get an indy to fit it.

Don't go buying a steering rack until you have a diagnosis done. There is no point spending money throwing parts at it based on answers from posters on a forum who don't even know anything about the power steering system on your car.

Your car doesn't have a pump, the power steering is all electric, there is no pump or fluid so the majority of posts in the thread so far are not relevant.

Dont buy anything until you get a mechanics opinion first.

If it needs replacing, the parts are cheap but the labor is a nightmare.

i hear you george, i just want to get as much into my head about it before i talk to someone, have all the options out there, theres a pump but its a sealed unit part of the rack heres a example.

The fact that an eBay seller puts the word pump in the description to make sure he covers as many search terms as possible does not mean there is a pump.

Some steering racks are electro-hydraulic and the rack and pump are all one unit (Opels mainly) but the Mk5 Golf based cars use a fully electric system which means no fluid and therefore no pump.
