Boeing has formally announced the B777-8 and B777-9 aircraft, look at www.newairplane.com

I love the part about the folding wingtips :) This was actually an option for the original -200, but no one purchased it, so now they get 21 feet of a longer wingspan without impacting the parking requirements for Dubai or Doha.

This has to be the nail in the coffin for the B747-8i

Boeing have allready cut back on production of the B747-8. Airbus have had no new orders on the A380 in over 12 months and had one cancellation. The financial media have been speculating that airlines have been waiting for the official announcement on the B777-X which they say will be able to cater for over 400 passengers. BA are one of those airlines.

as a pax aircraft defo, it seems to be doing okay as a cargo carrier though.

I reckon we'll still need them for high-density routes like LHR-DXB or SHA-NRA. Airlines need it and it makes them a lot of money.

B747 has had it's time of golden era and it's time for that to end. Over 50 years of it and it's slowly dying out.

The 747's maiden flight was in 1969, so a bit of time to go before the 50'th anniversary.

Emirates have ordered 50 new A380's and 150 new Boeing 777-X's. Are we looking at a new PanAm in the making? How will they fill them all?

This would bring their total A380 fleet to 140. Great to see the A380 getting more sales, am saddened to think the 777 is popular considering it is so terrible in 10-abreast economy, I wonder if the new 777-X will have a wider fuselage to give cramped passengers any few extra inches?

With 140 A380's one wonders how DXB will cope or will they have to shift operations to the new mega-airport that is being planned and partially built at Dubai World Central.

Yes it has opened and Wizz Air fly there, but it only has one runaway currently as you can see from google satellite maps, if built to the plan it will be the biggest airport ever with 160million passengers a year. Wikipedia article

I doubt it. Boeing might recommend a configuration of 3-3-3 but at the end of the day it's down to the airline what configuration they run with. If EK think they can get 10 abreast and make it work they will.

I believe EK are planing to have 90 A380 in their fleet, the latest orders are fleet replacements.

I read over on airliners.net that they were aiming for a fleet of around 120 A380's with the very earliest older A380's which are heavier being replaced once they have their full compliment of the newer aircraft.

Also some of the early A380's had wing crack issues which grounded a good share of A380's for technical checks in early 2012, I was pretty annoyed during that time as I was downgraded from an A380 flight to Kuala Lumpur due to the change and then had the misfortune to be stuck on their sardine can Boeing 777 for 8 hours afterwards.

first of all they have no issue filling them, they're in a market that has a lot of people/money, their geographic location is excellent so no worries about filling seats there.

second - 10-abreast is not terrible in their 777, seat is only an inch narrower than in a380, unless you're "big-boned", it makes no difference. a330 and 777's are essential for feeding in pax for their a380 network.

Emirates have said they are not moving to the new airport, they might have no choice there's is very little space left in OMDB for expansion they are already going underground to find space.

I imagine emirates are hugely helped by very low fuel prices compared to other airlines. Geographically in a perfect spot for a hub. With current aircraft types you can fly pretty much anywhere in one go.

This new airport is bit of a drive from Dubai, I am not a fan of it. Services have started form there a few weeks ago, dunno about the airline, so it will be interesting to see how that works.

The Dubai airport planners were really caught on the hop I think by investing so much money on flashy expansion, but they are simply the minimum standards expected there. It is an old airfield if I remember correctly. The ability of Dubai airport to cope with the passenger numbers will come into question sooner or later, though I do not accept the point about going underground being a sign of capacity issues, it is just smart. Anyway, given that upwards of half of Emirates passengers are connecting passengers, this new airport could work very well.

That said, the first phase from what I hear in Emirates is that the cargo operation is going to be completely moved to the new airport.

10 abreast sucks big time, we originally got the 777-200 with 9 across, the last later changed to 10 across with a new interior and those famous words, its only an inch different. Now following passenger complaints out next 777-300's will come with 9 across, considering that these aircraft are intended for a 16 hour route, it makes sense to keep your passengers comfortable.

No its not. It's 30 mins from DXB. It's 15 mins from Dubai Marina, New Dubai and the Palm. That's closer than DXB.
The only place it's far away from is the old Dubai area, which is just basically a little Karachi, so no loss there.

I can assure you that they pay the same market price as every other airline does at dxb, and at every other airport around the world.
Do you think a pipe just comes up out of the sand and pumps oil into the planes?

I think you are few minutes short in those times but I have a feeling there its gonna be an agree to disagree here. :pac: The forward planning issues of DXB aside, the new airport is waiting to get developed around. There are only industrial zones and undeveloped land where there is more density around the DXB 15/20 minute travel time. Swings and roundabouts really, Al Maktoum is on an extreme where DXB is a more centralised side of extreme.

Drove DXB to DWC in precisely 26 minutes yesterday. Are you familiar with Al Khail?
