Does anyone know if you were to write to RTE, would they sell you a copy of an old program should they have the tapes (which they mostly should) that is impossible to find otherwise? Any other ways of going about it?

You may laugh at this , but in RTE back in the day , they used to "reuse" tapes.
By which I literally mean write over an old program with a new one.
You're best bet is to send in an email but dont be surprised if they dont.
Youll have better luck if it was a commissioned program as opposed to an rte itself produced program.

That's why I said "Should" as this was from the 21st century, I'm assuming they didn't do it then! :P Thanks for the response anyway. So there's a chance to get a copy from that?

There's plenty of BBC stuff lost forever too. They don't have the complete original likely lads series. I seem to remember them putting out an appeal for people that had recordings of stuff they'd lost a couple of years back.

RTE have fully digitised their archives AFAIK. Best to get in touch with them and report back here.

RTE has a large archives section. However, shows like Wanderly Wagon, many GB era Late Lates and some Radharc documentaries are lost. As above posters said, this is a common occurrence in many broadcasters. You often hear of lost Doctor Who episodes showing up in someones attic, for instance. Top of the Pops is another show that has patchy archives.
