Round roast half price but not a cut I buy for roast. Nice butcher minced and sliced 4 lb piece for me. Great value for good quality:D

Good chopped into cubes for slow casserole too

Great value alright. I bought over a stone of it yesterday...that sounds massive when put like that. :D

I got a 5lb piece of topside for Xmas - worked out about €12.80. I then bought 2 smaller bits of topside, about 2lb each and 3 pieces of salmon cut roast also around 2lb so all in in all I have about 15lb of round roast in the freezer. That should keep the family eating for a while :)

Dont like round roast, way too chewy of a meat.

Anyone who likes BBQ can use round as a cheap alternative to brisket, works pretty well as they are very similar cuts of beef.

If you don't have a smoker you can just cook it low and slow in an oven for a decent result.

Make a dry rub (just google smoked brisket dry rub or bbq dry rub ir something), sit it on a rack in a roasting dish (to keep it from just cooking in it's own juices) and then cover it with tin foil and cook it for like 5-6 hours at 120c (for a 5-6 lb piece).

Because you're cooking at such a low temp for such a long time you don't even need to trim off the fat or silver skin as the fat and connective tissues will brake down almost completely and the fat and collagen in the silver skin will actually help keep the meat moist while cooking and because you cooked it on a rack the excess fat just falls to the bottom of the roasting dish (you can use this for basting throughout cooking too).

Get yourself a slow cooker in Tesco for €15-20, they make even the toughest of cuts taste tender and delicious.
And while you've got the slow cooker try out Sparks Pulled Pork recipe from the Cooking Club forum
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2056106123
    And his chilli recipe
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2055938138

Trust me, you will fall in love with those two dishes from a slow cooker, they're sublime

My supervalu had only relatively small round roasts on that half price offer i.e they were all .8-.9kg. So not for a big family dinner.

I always do round roast in the slow cooker and it turns out as soft as butter.
Meat, 2 cups or so of stock. At the end pour the liquid into a saucepan and whisk up with some bisto. Seriously yummy

I also do Pork chops in the slow cooker with a cup of stock and some BBQ sauce to flavour it. Tastes like ribs, very tender.

Had one for Sunday roast yesterday. Wasn't great. I had planned to buy a one or two and freeze them but will leave it.

    Hi,
I took your advice here and just made a stew out of mine. It's lovely now, really tender. Thanks for that. ;)
