Hi, so say i want to travel approx 100km a day at as low a cost as possible. What would people suggest? I'm happy to do basic maintenance (have a socket set and a few screwdrivers).

    Thanks.

    Budget?

Something with an XUD are often recommended for this sort of work.

    The bus?

What's a shoestring? I do 10k miles per year in a 2.0 l for what I consider a shoestring, no loan, just tax, petrol, insurance and a once yearly service.

I'd estimate on a weekly basis it costs me about €150 all in.

    That's not high mileage!

    VAG 1.9tdi of some description.

Thats what, 16000 miles a year?

We've a 2.2HDI Citroen C5 that we've put 8000miles on in the last 3 months, apart from the tax it averages 40mpg, hasn't had a single problem, is insanely comfortable and costs half what a decent passat does.

Personally if I was to get something again to do things as cheap as possible I'd probably go for a 2.0hdi 406, the problem with the 1.9td's is that they need to be serviced every 6000miles which is a pain if your doing big mileage.

A tidy Fiat stilo 1.2 (dynamic trim preferably) with a 6 speed gearbox assuming you won't be overtaking too often.

or last model megane 1.5dci if you are happy to deal with the known problems you'll be getting with that car. the engine/gearbox is fine but other stuff gives repeated trouble which doesn't stay fixed.

megane dci would be the more comfortable cruiser.

cars chosen because they are cheap to find without having to buy a completely worn out car and should give you better than 50mpg on a daily trip like that.
