Campagnolo Std double to compact

I currently have a 53/39 chainset on the front (Campagnolo record square taper).

Sometimes when I go for longer or very hilly rides I wish for a compact, but for racing Crits and time trials I like my standard double. Is there any compact that is literally swap on swap off with my current square taper bottom bracket? A 54/30 or 48/30 ideally.
Oh and would like a cheapish compact, as don;t wanna spend a little on it as mostly for touring/hilly training, I was looking at something like this. http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/ie/en/fsa-vero-square-taper-compact-10sp-chainset/rp-prod78792

Or is this not what would fit?

This is exactly what I'm looking to do.

If you've got Record or Chorus chainset you're in trouble (like me) cause the only compact to fit is the Campy carbon chainsaw which is like gold dust to find and is €200+ if you do find it.

If you're on a different groupset you've more options cause you've a longer BN spindle.

Wat!! I thought it'd be simple enough change. So is it the bottom bracket spindle is the problem?

Chorus and Record chainsets are built to go on a 102mm spindle. The other groups use 107 or something like that.

Youve got to use the right bb spindle length to get/keep the right chainline.

What model (group) is your chainset?

Campag record 2002 I think. Looks like this

If your swapping over and back will you not have to fiddle with fd each time?

FD will need adjusting that's true.

I think you've the same problem as me. Just keep an eye on ebay.
It only comes in carbon and goes for 200+ as far as I can see.

Of course if you find something else that works then post here and let me know.

Problem is 90% of sq tapers are JIS but you need ISO. And you need one designed for a 102 mm BB.

What cassette do you have on the back?

Could you not get the same effect with less hassle by getting a cassette with a bigger large sprocket?

You'd need to make sure your rear derailleur can handle the extra teeth and you'd need a larger chain but neither of those is likely to be much hassle.

the measurements you mention are the width of the BB's
    102 for double
107 generally for triples (or 111)

any square taper will fit on the spindles..

BUT...its not a perfect fit per se...
so the crank may not seat itself perfectly.

its possible to get a camapagnolo xenon square taper crank in black 50/34 for about €80/€90 from humphries in finglas or your local shop through them as they are the campy importer

just rember youll need a shorter chain by about 4/5 links too

When you say any square taper will fit it but may not seat perfectly what exactly do you mean?

Would an ISO compact not seat properly, and if not why not?

The profiles of the spindles are SLIGHTLY different ...
As I said a square taper will fit... Just not as perfectly as a campag crank on a campag spindle.
Bolt it on and cycle away! You may to adjust front derailler slightly too

So this is an ISO compact, is this likely to fit? I know its cheap but has a self extracting bolt which would be handy for changing about with my standard crank.

"The axle profile is compatible with ISO squared bottom bracket for 68mm case width an with a length of 107mm"

I believe the campag is 102mm axe length?

This won't result in the crank rubbing against the bottom bracket shell will it?

It won't foul the shell for sure...

Okay cool, I'll look into it over next few weeks and get something sorted over winter hopefully:) I know the chainline might be 5mm different but I don't think that really matters that much these days.

Chainline should be only 5/2 = 2.5mm out. Might try that one myself. Good find MM, thanks.
