There don't appear to be saved on the sim and I want to have them on my new htc one.

    Any help appreciated,

In general on Android it's the phone (or mmc on some phones), not the sim, where your contacts are held and default to.
In general not all contacts are synced, instead google with google, linkedin, skype etc stored / synced separately. If not maintaining the contacts in their respective websites or PC applications, it's worth turning off the respective sync after populating the contacts onto your phone. See under your phone's settings, Accounts. Each account is separate, but you can link contacts. Is there a problem being reported there under your google account?

HTC's contact app is different to the standard contacts app. Has caused me grief too. Buried in the people app is the option to copy all your contacts to google. You can then copy them all back. My current phablet is a samsung, so I can't immediately check whether there's a copy to SIM option.

Then you have the job of de-duplicating your contacts. Hope they number in the hundreds rather than the thousands.

You just need to save all contacts under your Google account. Easiest option here is to Export all Contacts to SD Card, delete all your contacts and then immediately Import All Contacts from SD - it will then ask if you want to save to your phone or Google account so select Google.

After that, go to your desktop Gmail - Contacts and select from the options drop down to Merge Duplicates and press OK. Now your contacts will sync locally again with the new changes. Simple and messy but I do this for all phones I work on mainly prior to new phone or installing a new ROM.

    Cheers guys.

Just exported to the sd card as advised, and then when I imported them it gave me an option to add to the phone or add to google. I synced the phone contacts manually then through the "accounts and sync" section in settings. Then I did the same on my new phone and they are there now.

I don't have to worry about duplicates on the old phone as I'm going to reset and remove all data before giving it to a family member.
