Sounds like possibly a fuel problem, if cranks and turns over it means the immobiliser was happy. The M43 engine in these is very reliable.

Pull up the back seat and see if you can hear the fuel pump priming as the ignition is turned on. Could be the pump itself or the relay that controls it.

Not sure where the relay is but if you wanted to rule out the pump, bring a live and an earth wire to it and see if it spins. If it doesn't then the pump needs replacing, if it does spin, then you need to go to relays/wiring.

I think on the E46 the Fuel pump and DME relay are behind the glove box, on the E36 they were in the engine bay.

Did you open up the metal plate under the back seat (its about the size of a dinner plate) and put your hand on the pump itself?

From memory the DME relay and the fuel pump relay are the same, so you could try swapping them.
