Ok so basically just inherited a 318ci which is fitted with the original radio/tape deck as part of the dash & just wondering if anyone knows if BMW ever made a Radio/CD to fit it.

Yes sure there was a CD version too. Plenty on adverts/ebay/donedeal.
That's plug and play, you just need to make sure you have a radio of the same generation with either the "round" connector with 17 pins or the other one with flat pins.

Otherwise you can get something more useful than a single CD player, which will get your bored very quickly, tired of changing CD. Check the Grom Audio kit, you can plug a USB stick and pay tunes from there, or even plug in your phone and play virtually thousands of songs from your iPhone/iPod Android phone etc.

Also just check the boot and see if you might have a 6cd changer, thats also an option to retrofit.

Or fit an aux cable to the current set up you have. BMW-driver.net is full of useful info about your car

Thanks for that, no changer in the boot, but have found a CD unit on eBay for £80 so happy with that.

One quick question regarding the connectors, I haven't taken the unit out, but it's a 2001 E46 'business' unit - if I replace it with say a 2002 E46 'business' unit, will it have the same connector, or do the connectors vary even within the E46 range ?

Where in the country are you?
I have a radio/cd for an E46, the aerial connection didn't fit my 2004 so it should fit yours.
