Battery longevity

My wife's 307 wouldn't start this morning and mech is saying its the battery, this would be the second in three years, car is used for local town driving, shouldn't we be getting more out of a battery than 3 years.

You should yeah but probably not much longer. Batts have a lifespan of 3-6 years (varies greatly).
There may be many factors at play, for instance overcharging the battery will decrease lifespan. Only short trips may also decrease the lifespan.

Has every new battery been brand new? Where did you buy them?

This one cost 65 euros which isn't too bad, but I'd rather spend 120 on a Varta that will last 5+ years. e.g. im still on my original varta on a 05 TDI

The battery might just need a re-charge, you could buy a C-Tek (spelling?) battery charger/conditioner which are claimed to do a great job restoring exhausted batteries.
