Clerical Officer Internship - HSE (Please advise)

I saw an internship advertised on FAS.ie / Intero yesterday for 4 Clerical Officers in the HSE (general hospital setting). This is the third or even fourth time I've seen this internship adverstised in the last year, orginally with only 2 positions available.

My question is: what are the chances of gaining employment in the position after the 9 months - because it looks to me as though they have one lot in and then when they are finished they advertise for the next lot.

I thought there was a moratorium on employing people in jobs like that so how they can advertised internships as a means to full-time employment if they can't employ people anyway.

If I was to go for it, I would be taking a drop in income of about €250 per month, it's a risk I would be willing to take for full-time employment if I thought there was a chance of a job afterwards.

    Thank you.

There are meant to be rules in place to stop them getting another lot in straight away after the last. Look it up and find the rules about it.

You will not be offered a job after your internship, have you heard of the embargo on recruitment in the public sector? It's a fact, you won't be.

I am currently doing an internship as a clerical officer in a hse setting. During my interview I was told upfront that there would be no job at the end of it with the embargo. I really like the internship and I'm getting good experience so for me it was worth taken it up. Before this I had been unemployed for a few months so my situation is a bit differant than yours. I don't think if I was in employment I would have accepted it.

Thank you, that is what I needed to know. Glad to hear it's a good decision for you though :)

I work as a CO within a hospital setting and over the last 12 months one person has been placed into a job after their internship. My workplace is a voluntary hospital and has different leeway when it comes to new hires. I would guesstimate that approx. 10 interns have worked here over the last 12 months. A new batch of 4 started last Monday.

From what you have seen the interns cover etc do you think it was a worthwhile experience for them regardless of the fact that they didn't get jobs.

I became extremely friendly with two interns and both have gone on to get jobs in the private sector (Mater Private Hospital in Cork). I personally think the experience is organised very well: 1 month of training in the medical records dept., 1 month of training in a patient facing dept., 1 month of training alongside medical secretaries, then 5 or 6 months in one particular area. You definitely get the full experience. The biggest issue a lot of the 'employed' COs have is that the interns do a lot of the same work as them and are being paid a pittance for it, morale-wise it can be tough because the pressures due to the stretch in the system can be very high.

You could be lucky and be placed in a nice enough environment. I know at least where I work we often have whiprounds at the end for interns that are leaving etc but it's still a tough placement I think.
