Have you ever driven drunk?

I'm curious about the answers to this tbh.

Personally, yes I have. Drove once after having a few pints for about 18 miles and got home intact. Swore never again.

That was over 10 years ago and I never have since.

However I was very lucky and incredibly stupid.

Ever since that journey, and even prior to it, I wouldn't drink with more than a bottle of Bud in me. Now I wouldn't even chance that!

I see numerous people in restaurants having multiple glasses of wine and hopping into the car afterwards.

Pub carparks are full and I'd be amazed if they are all non drinkers.

I have spoken to people who openly admit to driving after a few pints.

I thought that attitude was gone in the younger generation. Am I wrong?

Drove once after a couple of pints back when it was legal to do so. Wasn't legally over the limit, but I was definitely aware of not being 100%

    Never again.

I haven't driven after a night drinking but have woken up the next morning and driven home when if I was bagged I would probably have been over the limit. At the time I would probably have felt fine but looking back don't think I should have driven. If I can now I wont even drive over to a friends house if I'm going to have a few cans as the possibility to drive home early in the morning when I may be still tipsy is too high

I'm currently off the road for drink driving because I'm an idiot :/ Don't think I'll go back driving though when my ban is up. Don't trust myself.

many moons ago - morning after a proper session (4 hours later) , not proud of it, drove a fair old distance as well :( , arrived in 1 piece (car and myself) - thankfuly I can strike that one down to a life experience

Nope. And never would. I've worked too hard and spent too much money to hand back my licence like that! But then back home in London, DD is absolutely not tolerated. Your mates would take the keys if they ever thought you'd drive drunk. I don't understand the relaxed attitude to DD here...

We're so careful that if we drink over the limit the evening before, then the car doesn't move the next day.

Two spaced out over three hours or so is my limit.

Drink driving laws as with all laws are in place to keep the lowest denominator in check. People who lack common sense.

The main problem with common sense is
    Its just not very common.

About a month ago, 2 pints with some guys after work over maybe 2 hours....yeaa...no thanks. idiot :/

Does the day after count? :)

I remember taking driving lessons reeking of alcohol...ah bless.

Well I'll be honest here, and no need for the shame on you speech's etc

About 10 years ago the waiting list for the driving test was something like 12 months in Dublin, the shortest waiting time was in Clare, so I applied to do it down there...
Brought a friend down with me for the night, my test was quite early the next morning so the plan was to get a good night sleep etc, my mates Gran was from the area so she put us up.

That evening we went to the cinema at about 6pm, we arrived out at 8pm, there was a pub on our way home so we said we'd "go in for one". Famous last words...

We stumbled home sometime in the am, I woke up feeling rotten, his Gran cooked us a fry which I remember absolutely struggling through it.

Anywho, did the test about 10am and passed.

unfortunately 20 years ago I did, incredibly embarrassed and ashamed I did and worrying remember nothing about doing it, except that I got up and asked for a lift off my now mother in law only for her to say my car was outside.
I was at a wedding that day so was well over the limit.

    Never ever again.

I reckon the stupidity of driving drunk pales in comparison to the stupidity of admitting to it here..

Very true, the number of RTAs caused by drinking driving pales in significance to those from been on boards posting and commenting that its not a good thing to do, proved by lahalane.

    Once.

After the 'people; I was doing DD for spiked my coke with Vodka while I was away pissing. I never noticed it because I had a cold at the time and just thought I was feeling ****....

Was bloody lucky to blow just under the limit when I stumbled across a checkpoint. I spent a moment wondering where it'd come from before they burst out ****ing laughing.

They were thusly left at the side of the road.

Many times. Once I drove from KK to Dublin at 3 in the morning having been drinking all day and the next day I couldn't remember a single minute of the journey.

Different times back then but still outrageously reckless and awfully dangerous.

    The stupidity of youth, eh?

Curious to know what difference it makes admitting it here? Can they ban me from driving on the internet also?

This lads story would make you think twice.

I need my car to get to work, if the luxury was taken away it would make my life 10 times harder for the sake of a few beers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 120 ✭✭popepaisley1

did it loads when i was young. never had a problem with it. would have several pints and drive. would always take extra caution. i knew i was breaking the law. i'd drive slower, keep alert. i dont get drunk easily, not messy drunk like i see some people do.

i wouldn't do it now. if i lost my licence i'd be screwed with work, and you have less chance of getting away with it now imo.

tried driving stoned once. jesus, never again. frightened the sheeite outta myself. couldn't focus. but then, thats just me. someone else might be fine.

also, i have to say this was pretty hard to type out while driving on the motorway.

The most I've done is moved the car out of the drive, maybe 50ft before I was going to town. The mother was driving us in and my car was in the way so I moved my own out of the way and put it back in.

Even then it didnt feel great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,480 ✭✭✭YbFocus

Yeah when younger the lads would drink in each others house of a random night and we'd tip home the mile or so in the car, wouldn't dream of even taking a sip now!
Even if I'm not driving for hours, I just won't.

Have you ever been drunk in control of that moral high horse?

If you were stupid enough to drink and drive and were lucky enough not to have killed yourself or someone else and are wise enough to learn from it then it was a very valuable life experience.

Well, I suppose while it isn't smart either way, but what could possibly happen?
I could say that I drove home dickety-two years ago with 20 pints on me and whatnot else in my blood, but how would I be prosecuted?
If I said that I was on the road right now, high as a kite and give my location, that's a different matter.

He was 1.6 Promille, that is fairly drunk, not just a few beers.
But yes, in Germany people will think twice before having a few and you don't even want to know what happens when you break a red light!
None of this 3-4 cars more is ok after red nonsense.

Most people are aware and don't drink drive
But I suspect there is a few who drive the next morning without fully realising that they are still over the limit.

Gaybo wasn't too pleased that the number of detections has fallen over the years dispite garda and minister reasurance that the drink driving campaign was working.

My Mam and Dad used to go out for a drink every Sunday my Dad would drive home afterwards. We were living in the city they used to drink in a country pub near his work place it was about a 15mins journey on a main road. He once got stopped at a checkpoint and sure he knew the cop who just left him off?????? that was about 20yrs ago. Id have no problem saying my Dad is a fu*king muppet for doing it, it would seem it was the thing to do out that way at that time as nearly every person who drove to the pub got back in their car and drove home.

Thank god nowadays drink driving is a complete no no.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,817 ✭✭✭✭Dord

Nope. I prefer not to chance it as one drink can turn into a couple. So, I just drink softdrinks if I'm driving. I rarely drink these days anyways. Maybe one or two times a month if even.

was drinking once in my parking with friends (celebrating), had to turn car around, that's as much as I sat at steering wheel drunk.

Used to drive drunk all the time. I thought I was bulletproof back then. Thankfully I was alway more cautious when driving after a few beers so never had any incidents.

All growed up now and a lot more sensible. It's just not worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,236 ✭✭✭Dr. Kenneth Noisewater

I'd never chance driving after drinking more than one bottle of beer. And even at that, I just don't bother having the one, as it puts a lip on me.

I've driven the next morning on occasion when it'd probably be borderline but generally I'd wait however long until I feel better and have some grub in me.

I’m not proud of it, but yes I have. Once was 10+ years ago, was at a party and my partner got stupid drunk drinking shots. He normally is so sensible and this was the first and last time I saw him so bad. He was puking, half passed out, the works. The plan had been to walk home, but there was no way of moving him and there was no taxi in the town at that time. So I bundled him in the car and drove the mile home. I was petrified and took the back roads. I doubt I was that much over as I had been dancing up a storm all night and hardly drinking, but I wouldn’t have fancied getting pulled over.

I probably have the morning after a couple of times. But I wouldn’t risk that any more. If I know I have something on in the morning, or even a long drive in the afternoon, I try not to have a late night. It’s just not worth the risk and if I lost my licence, I’d lose my job, not to mention what you would have to live with if you hurt someone as a result.

I know several people who would think nothing of drinking 5/6 drinks and getting in the car and driving home. Sure it’s only down the road they think, eh yeah, makes no difference it’s still as dangerous and irresponsible as feck. At the risk of making massive assumptions, in my opinion it’s always the lawyers, doctors, accountants that are doing it. Do they think because they are middle classed they won’t have an accident? I often wonder why the guards just don’t park outside the local golf club… they’d make a killing!

Local pub where I used to live would tip off the cops if they saw someone drinking with a car key on the table.

Bit of a weird one imo, they could just be the keys his house keys happen to be on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,036 ✭✭✭murphym7

Did it fairly often 15+ years ago or so. Tea time pints after work and drive the motor bike home. There was a pub full of us used to do it, nobody drunk, but all after 2/3 after work pints. Pretty stupid at the time and lucky not to get caught. Wouldnt have even a glass now. As was said earlier, driving is a luxury and it is a luxury I cant afford to be without. But more important than anything else, the risk you pose to other peoples lives by your stupidity. I am glad I copped on.

It is great to see how much the attitude has changed in Ireland over the past 10 years or so. Many people I knew back then were off the road at some stage (some more than once!). Then it was a clap on the back and "hard luck there boy" or "unucky". These days you are treated like a lepper if you admit to being off the road (by most people) and rightly so.

You wouldnt get that now i tell ya, pubs will turn a blind eye just so they can get the trade

Have never done it after a drink, even if it was only one bottle.

But I have definitely drove the morning after on a couple of occasions and I would be certainly still over the limit...

    Contradictory I know....
