Proposing a new role - help required

I am looking for some advice if possible.

I am currently working but looking for a new role. I work in a large multinational company and recently moved to a new team on a temporary basis.

From speaking to my colleagues and my own observations there is a need for someone to cover a specific role on the team. Currently the work is being carried out by two people (who already are over-stretched) and is very reactive in nature.

I have an idea to develop a proposal for this new role and present it to my direct manager and department manager.

Can anyone give advice on what format this proposal should be in? I am planning on outlining why I believe there is a need for the role and the potential benefits. What else would I need to cover?

I will also include feedback from colleagues and the various stakeholders affected.

My aim is for this role to be created (the company is in the process of creating new jobs) and for me to move into it. Any help would be much appreciated.

You would want to include what you think would be the salary range for this role plus on costs (such as PRSI/pension/bonus etc). Also include possible training costs. Then balance that against revenue generated from the role or costs saved and productivity increased by having a new person for this job rather than continuing with the two existing staff taking on the work.

Most times headcount and new roles come down to basic budget requirements. So although you think the team would run more smoothly with this role, that cannot be the main focus - the main focus has to be the monetary gain balanced against the cost. Don't assume the management aren't already aware of the need for the position - it could just be a case of not having the funding to implement the role. Perhaps sound out the manager first if this has ever been considered, because if you arrive in with your business case and it is something they are well aware of already you could look like you are trying to teach granny to suck eggs and might piss your manager off.

Thank you, did as advised as the creation of this new role is already on his radar for 2014. It looks for the next six months I will gradually start doing this specific work.

All good news however, he did advise if it gets posted as a permanent position (which I fail to see why it won't) the job would actually be classed at a grade lower than what I am already on. I reckon my salary would stay the same but it could be a backwards move career wise.
