I have an Ursus c385(zetor crystal). It can be slow started in the cold and most times I would have to jumpstart it in the winter a fair bit.

Someone told me today if I use the primer pump it will make the starting of the tractor easier. Is this true

Has it got the 6354 Perkins engine conversion by any chance?

I was talking to a mechanic today and he didn't think it would be dangerous

It's just that the Perkins are notoriously hard to start in the cold on these conversions. It's basically a 4 to 6 cylinder conversion. Maybe install a heater plug?

    thanks for that

is it dangerous priming before starting?

Is it a big job to install a heater plug?

Most tractors have heater plugs it is just a matter of replacing old one and making sure that it is working. Usually heater plug starts to heat when you turn key first notch from off position. You have to give 5-20 seconds for it to heat diesel.

Of more use to you maybe to install a hi-speed starter. These are a starter that turn at a higher speed than normal starter. There are really benificial with tractors that are lazy to start.

Lazy starting engines are a vicious circle as when they are slow to start they drain the battery and this again slows the starter. The starter also starts to burn out from over use. Make sure to give tractor a chance to recharge after starting. This means that one a week it gets an hour running, not just ticking over it needs to run at over 1500 revs

I would also check the alternator to make sure it is generating around 13.5 volts as it needs to generate this to recharge battery. Lastly make sure that all leads and terminals are clean and making proper contact.

A couple of checks check voltage of battery it needs to be around 13.5V when before starting if not it is not being charged. Same with alternator.

Check battery that all cells are covered with acid and if you can get a battery hydrometer check that the Specific Gravity is between 1350 and 1400 idealy 1365.

Usually slow starting tractors are a combination of things rather than one in particular,
