Will an insurance compensated iPhone be locked ?

    Hi all,

Just got a call from a friend. His son lost his iPhone4S 6 months ago and was insured and got compensated, more or less.

It seams that it has now been found with a broken screen and repaired. My friend says that it works with three different providers SIM cards.....

Bt I am wondering ... is that it ? or is it likely to come up as blocked the first time they connect it to iTunes or sync or register an Apple iTunes account ?

Anyone any experience on this ?

I said this to him ... so I hope he will. Thanks for the info too. I assumed they (ins co) would report it lost/stolen and Apple would lock it...

It's the networks that block it. Apple have no part in it.

If it had iOS 7 installed and Find My iPhone enabled, someone would need to log in with your friend's Apple ID and password to be able to reactivate or restore the device.

If the phone was lost 6 months ago, it's doubtful that iOS7 was installed on it (unless the son was running a Beta).

Have they tried connecting it to iTunes?

Thanks guys ... I will know on the weekend. He is getting a micro SIM card cut today and I am guessing he will connect to iTunes soon. He is nervous about it now after I told him about my worries. I will update here when I know more. Thanks again.

By the way ... I have been googling this issue and have found a number of places where people have said that insurance companies always get phones locked that are the subject of a claim ...

I thought that too, also it was said it works with 3 SIM cards. As in 3 SIM cards from 3 different networks or 3 from the same network? Form what I read with blocked phones is that the network will actually display on the phone as normal but no calls can be made. Have you tried to make a call? Think the block can take up 24hrs to come active.
Agree with others phone should be retuned to insurance company.

I agree with the last point. I have said to him to see if it works and then hopefully return it. I think maybe it would work until connected to iTunes.

Why do you think iTunes will do anything? Apple have no part in the blocking of iPhones.

Oh ... I thought it was them that did the locking. Is it the provider then ? O2 or 3 or vodaphone ?

Yes the networks do it but not sure do they do it at the request of the insurance company or what way it works.

Usually if you report a phone lost or stolen either you or the insurance company will ask the provider to blacklist the phone or they wont process the claim.
