    Yep. De-tar first then clay.

Soften the clay by moulding it in your hands until its really soft.
Use plenty clay lubricant and go at small areas at a time. keeping it all slippy all the time. Fold the clay often to keep any pick up away from the surface of your paint.
    Wash.
    Polish,
    Wax.

Give the car a good wash, then de-tar, using a fallout remover (de-ironiser) after will be a great help but optional, a good wash again and then go at it with the clay.

Depending on how big the clay bar is, you can cut it up into a few pieces. Most clay bars are big enough to be cut into 3. As mentioned above, knead the section into an nice sized flat piece and using plenty of lubricant, work in sections approx 2ft x 2ft. Sliding the clay back and forth until you feel no resistance from the surface, it should feel like rubbing ice on ice when the section is fully decontaminated. Check the clay bar, if badly contaminated, turn over or knead until you get a fresh surface and move onto the next section. Start at the top of the car as the lower sections are more contaminated with tar, etc. Remember, that if you drop the section of clay bar at any stage, be sure to bin it, as it will have picked up lots of fine grit which will destroy the paintwork. Your first time to clay will take you quite some time as its a learning experience, but once you've done a car fully you know what you're doing and wont be as nervous the next time and you'll be much quicker.

TIP: this time of year, with the cold, the clay bar may become hard, resulting in it being hard to knead and turn to find a fresh section or may mar the paint slightly, so a small amount of warm water in an old cup to drop the clay bar into for 10-20 seconds will help soften it, to make it easier to knead and use on the paintwork.

Once clayed, be sure to get lasting results by protecting the car with a good wax or sealant. Polishing before protection is an option if the paint needs a bit of a boost.

You'll be amazed by the difference a good claying of the car will make!
Be sure to post a few pictures; before and after! Enjoy.....and welcome to the world of wanting to try out every detailing product available on the market!! ;)
