...and then gave up learning without passing, can I use these lessons towards the new mandatory lessons you're supposed to take? I know the instructor personally and he is sound if that helps.

Can I also ask, do I have to do my theory test again now if I apply for a driving test to replace my expired learner permit?

The theory test certificate is valid for two years. You will have to start from scratch if it has expired. If you exchanged the cert for a learner permit then the permit is valid for 5 years.

The lessons are only mandatory if you got your first leaner permit AFTER April 2011. If you had one prior to that, you don't have to do the mandatory 12 lessons. If you were doing lessons 3-4 years ago, I presume you had a learner permit back then, so you are good to go. It would be highly advised that you get lessons from a trained professional before you start driving again, but you are not obliged by law to do so.

The only caveat to all that, is that your leaner permit must not have expired by more than 5 years. If it has expired within 5 years, you are good to go. However, if it expired more than 5 years ago and you never got it renewed, then it is viewed as if you never had a leaner permit at all. You'll be looked upon as a brand new driver starting out from scratch & you will have to do the 12 mandatory lessons. Any lessons you took in the past will not be considered.

So check the date on your learner permit and see when it expired. Or call up your local motor tax office and they will be able to tell you, as that will determine where you stand & not when you took your last lessons.

I think you're confusing the fact a learner permit which is out of date for less than 5 years can be renewed, there is no 5 year learner permit.

Thanks a million, I think I might be okay for the 5 years thing.

My post may have been confusing but I'm not confused. The permit must be renewed within 5 years of its expiry is what I mean.
