Hi, just bought a car and will drive it back from dealer tomorrow. Will I be caught for not having tax before I can pay it? I live in north Dublin.

I presume it will take 1 week or so to sort out the change of ownership and paying the tax.

Will I be caught if I drive and park at shopping centre car park and likes?

Usually how do they spot cars without tax please? e.g. Will they catch people at IKEA car park?

    Many many thanks!

    Thanks very much!

    1) Can I drive it during that time (within 10 days after I bought it) please?
    2) will the traffic warden know my situation from their system? Or I can ring somebody if I got a ticket?

eh I don't think so.... I got caught for a fine for no tax by parking on the street the same day I collected my car back from the garage. I appealed the fine but lost as the law is you shouldn't have a car on the road that is not taxed. This is despite me being able to prove that I taxed the car a few days later and I had a time and dated copy of the change of ownership form that I submitted. You can now tax a car online without log book. I believe the gardai may be more understanding. Be careful where you park if you risk it would be my advice

I bought a car a few years ago and drove into a check point and was fined for not displaying a tax disc. Bítch of a ban guarda.

    Thank you very much!

From my understanding, the change of ownership will take several days instead of immediately. If I pay now online, I will have to pay for the past 6 month for the previous owner. That's why I though I should wait for the change of ownership before I tax it.

Am I wrong at this please?

There is no grace for motor tax, unless it is a very very new law change. The legal position was (and I believe still is) always zero grace for no tax.

Are you confusing it with the 10 days grace that you are legally allowed to drive around without an insurance disc after you started a new term of insurance?

I believe you can tax it at the tax office rather than on line and maybe this would avoid paying the arrears. I was in fact the time I was fined not even the registered owner as the form wasn't even in Shannon, it was still with the dealer. But this wasn't accepted and I had to pay the fine. Believe me I was not impressed and argued my case. It made no sense to me because technically you shouldn't collect your new car until you are legally the owner and are display a tax disc...!! In theory you should hand over the cash, complete paper work and wait for tax disc to be posted before you drive your new car home...!!

I just bought a car recently that was declared off the road.

After having viewed the car I took the log book with me. Went in to the motortax office and put it back on the road. They gave me a tax disc there and then.

I brought the disk with to pick up the car and I got the new log book in the post just a couple of days after.

And what about NCT? Did you drive it home with out that?

The car had a valid NCT already.

Tax office never asked for one anyway. They just wanted insurance details. (And money obviously :))

Called into tax office in person here, they confirmed I couldn't tax it yet, but stamped the form as approved and provided a short letter. Had the dated receipt from garage also, so felt I'd be covered with the Garda if stopped.

Didn't park on a public road though - multistory/shopping centre/driveways only. Traffic warden isn't going to exercise discretion for a parked car, whereas you can at least explain to a Garda that you meet.

I agree on this. However you would think that via an appeal with the traffic section in the council that they would be more understanding once you can back up your claim with documentation. They would appear to now have a zero tolerance policy. I was pretty pevved as I was in no way trying to avoid paying tax just waiting for change of ownership form to come back to me and to complete online which I usually do. The whole system in my opinion is a bit silly given the systerm in Ireland dictates that you need to post off the change of ownership form.

Anyway valuable lesson learnt on my behalf....!

That was harsh. I was stopped one afternoon, about 2 hours after I'd bought the car. Guard accepted the receipt and waved me on. Car was insured and didn't require an NCT just yet.

Traffic wardens just look to whether a valid tax disc is present or not. I would avoid parking where they operate until you have a disc.

When I bought a car earlier this year, I kept checking the motortax website every day. Had to chase the dealer once. As soon as it showed up under my name, I requested a PIN and taxed it. Printed the receipt and put it in the glovebox until the disc arrived.
