always wondered am I doing this right and is there a good unit specifically for this type of injection.

I inject in to fold under neck pinching the fold but wonder is it effective as you feel you are injecting into nothing.

what do ye do and where do ye inject.

no point vaccinating if doing it wrong:)

anywhere under the skin, behind the shoulder is the "proper" spot

The main thing you need watch out for is when you go under the skin you don't come out the other side and give off a fresh air shot especially in calves.

Are there any specific injectors for the job. If not what gauge needle do ye use.

depends on thickness of skin and density of drug

usually short needle 1/2 or 3/4 inch about 16G

3/4" 16 gauge I would normally use. I inject behind the shoulder on the off side of the animal in the crush. That way you're working away from yourself. Like above make sure you're in under the skin and not back out the other side.
It's best to work on dry clean animals too.

I switched to 21g and my god its so much easier on man and beast. goes in like a hot knife through butter even with a thick whitehead and some animals dont even notice it going in.

wish I found out about them years ago

Nothing as bad a struggling with a blunt needle, no matter what the gauge.
I must look into 21 gauge and give it a go.

You should be injecting into nothing subcutaneous means under the skin. these are long acting injections. The solution is supposed to be absorbed into the body slowly. My own preference is into the skin of the neck not always possible after that behind the shoulder. A good trick is to inject into the far side of the body however keep it on the higher side of the body so that he will not push it against the wall of the crush.

Experience is a big thing and not being afraid as he jumps/struggles. I often do vaccinate, fluke and worms togeather. Vaccine into the neck, wormer(ivermectin) near side. Fluke(flukiver or trodax) far side split sites especially if flukiver.

You go bang bang bang with one up the crush, Bang bang bang back the crush and bang bang back up the crush, young lad keeps them up or down. If one animal is an issue leave and come back

can you get 21g with metal hub

after a couple of 'mishaps' ( especially on sheep ) with plastic hub needles over the years, I have stopped using them

21G would be damn slow for high volume dosing (levacide) ..... ok ready to use vaccines etc,

oh yeah. Thats the only stuff it can be used for and it cant be any way thick but for vaccine its the business.

18g might be a runner the rest of the time

16g is a big brute of a needle but there are times its needed

Out of curiosity, what gauge/length do people use for IM injections?

What's the craic with injecting them on the inside? Is it just to avoid the pillars if they are moving?

If ya lean I'm over an animal in the crush, pull out the skin fold, you are working away from yourself and the animal.
I find it much easier than working on the side nearest you, but sometimes, needs must!
Give it a try and report back.
