Wondering wether a tri bike or road bike be better for ironman distance as I can suffer from back pain. I have done one ironman on road bike and it went well but just at the stage where a tri bike or up grade my wheels on my road bike would be best option.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

I'd say really you can choose either as long as you have a proper, professional bike fit, there shouldn't be any significant back pain. Depending on the terrain one will be more appropriate than the other.

Generally speaking though, road bikes can potentially have a lot more comfortable geometry than a TT/Tri bike. Road bike geometry can vary greatly.

Just up grading wheels would be the cheaper option as would be looking for a good second hand bike and would be purchasing and then fitting.
