Hi there, we have a dedicated class for 4 to 6 year olds at our Taekwon-Do gym, it's called Little Kickers - the instructor is a primary school teacher and is wonderful with the little guys.

Drop me a line on littlekickers[at]redstar[dot]ie - we are on the Ballyboggan road

My advice would be not to start a 6 year old training in a general karate class with older kids. If you can find a club that specialises in teaching to young kids, then that's great (Yomchi's suggestion seems like a good idea) but don't either of you expect that your son will actually learn any karate or tae kwon do because at that age they just don't get it. I generally refuse to take kids under 8 and any time I've made an exception to this rule I have regretted it, because they take up so much of my time and have really poor attention spans.

I'm with Zen on this one.. And although I HATE that every time there's a post here looking for Karate etc that a BJJ player will jump in and recommend a BJJ club what I will say is that grappling (BJJ, Judo etc) comes easier to such a young child ~ tumbling, falling and wrestling are almost normal play time activities for children anyway.

Just something for you to consider.

Spot on, our Little Kickers class is more about play and learning through fun. Obstacle courses, tumbling, imagination games etc etc, a whole pile more fun than Taekwon-Do to be honest :o

Yes, I do agree. I've seen a good number of young kids around 6yrs doing Judo and it does seem to be easier for them. If they still doing it at 8 or 9 years then introduce them to karate if you want.

If you are bringing your child to Karate make sure they are registered with the NGB ONAKAI,the Instructor will have done coaching levels and will be Garda vetted, stay and observe a class and ensure it suitable for your child .
