non use declaration for van thats been off the road since 1993

Hi all, I have a query about the non use of a motor vehicle declaration that I'm hoping someone can help me with.

Im doing up an old commercial van that I bought about 3 years ago and its been sitting on my driveway ever since. Its been registered in my name for that time and I always thought it odd that I never got a motortax renewal notice (maybe not registered on national vehicle and driver file?).

I never got around to sorting the new SORN type requirements a couple of months back after trying to get the garda to stamp the old retrospective form, which they wouldnt do.

I want to regularise this as I intend to have the van on the road soon, so what should I do? I read somewhere that because the van MIGHT not be on NVDF, to do nothing as ive never been sent a tax renewal notice. Alternatively I could 'sell' the van to my partner thereby zeroing the account?

I'd really appreciate some guidance on this.

PS van was last taxed in 1993!

You shouldn't be charged more than 3 years arrears then.
If the van has been eligible for classic tax since then, the arrears would be less than €200.

Just saw that you owned it three years, so yes, there would be just three years owing.

Seeing as how alls changed regarding commercial taxing these days (dont see too many pikeys drivin vans now) ...isnt it a fact that you cant tax a van WITHOUT a DOE cert....so would i be right in thinkin, if they were to charge back tax..then by right you would need to get 3 DOE certs backdated .....do u see what i'm talkin about.....or is that something the tax office can overlook....;)

no. you must be on the wrong track there. The only issue with back tax is because he didn't declare it off the road in time. Is there not a procedure in the case of a long term off the roqd vehicle that you can swear it was off the road with a JP or Notary? Sure I read that somewhere.

Thanks for all the responses. ..see what you're saying with DOE... you can't tax a commercial vehicle without one. This whole area is a minefield and ive yet to be pleasantly surprised when dealing with the tax office. As such, think its simplest to just "sell" it and clear the decks that way.

    Thanks again

one assumes that, as you can't turn back time and get several DOE certs , and you can't tax a van without those certs, that they actually cannot charge back tax on a non-DOE'd vehicle. :-)

If it is over 30 years old, I suppose you can tax it as a Classic....
