Anyone know how the hell they're recording the behind the spoiler view @ 1:06.

For the life of me I cannot see a camera mounted that far back behind the car.

Hi they would be using a camera mounted on a hand held remote flying device most likely the ones that have 4 blades/fans for best monouverability.

Good vid I like his driving skills.

Key is in the shadows. Look to the left hand side. There's a car following with a crane mounted

Whereabouts in the video are you seeing the shadows off (something like) that?

The problem is I doubt very much that vehicle is able to keep up with the 650HP Fiesta on take off.

Another issue with the multicopter suggestion is that, the camera is matching the cars speed perfectly as if it is mounted to the car.

I doubt you'd be able to keep the distance that steady using the methods mentioned.

It's certainly a mystery to me!

Gymkhana 1, 2 and 3 were good, since then they've gone down hill.
A special mention for "jim kana fully locked" :)

He probably did another run with a rear mounted camera or something.

That would be my reckoning or an overhead cable or something. There always shot over like 2 days.

Given the image stability relative to the car it is probably a mounted camera with some editing to hide the mounting.

I'd say this is the most likely explanation.
    YbFocus wrote: »

The problem with an over head cable or multicoptor or whatever is that:

When you see the view, you can see Ken turning to the right hand side, so he's on the outside of the bend.

As the car turns the camera stays perfectly perpendicular to the car,

if the camera wasn't mounted to the car, we would see the angle of the car change.

Precisely. It's relatively easy to "remove" the camera arm via software; NASA did something like that when taking "selfies" of Curiosity on Mars.

    This.

One of the main sponsors is GoPro so they want to show the mounted cameras features.

Theres not a single part of that video that suggests it was one continuous take, which for me, takes away a huge part of the 'skill' when you can just do the same thing over and over until its perfect. Its not that hard to get continuity right.

its akin to those 'impossible basketball shots' on youtube - only done with a colossal budget

I'm not saying it's exactly that vehicle, but I remember watching a unrealted BTS video where the production team used two M83 AMG's as camera cars.

Not quite 0-60 in 1.8s, but you're having a laugh if you think that was actually recorded with the fiesta going flat down the straight. It's all video tricks.
I doubt you'd be able to keep the distance that steady using the methods mentioned.
You'd be surprised. Rearrange the course so that straight is about 3 times longer, have a pre-arranged speed, record it until you get the shot.

I've done the same thing myself. Go pro on the front of my car, trailing another car at a predefined speed.

It's easy to remove these sorts of things in photos, it's a bloody nightmare to do it with video, where the background is constantly changing. Hence why the sort of vehicle I posted above is often used for filming exterior shots of vehicles.

This is the sort of 'rig' you'd require for any sort of stable video setup.

    228925_262851927075026_401753_n.jpg

I'd even be dubious there's enough space to mount that under blocks car, or something to mount it to.

I'm not just pulling this out of my arse. I've been involved in automotive videography and photography :p

    Times have changed, though
a go pro mounted to the spoiler with a Gimbal for stabilization is all you need today. :D

No need for a f*ck off crane to hang off the back of the car!

But there's one serious hole in my theory of having the camera mounted from the spoiler,

in the video you absolutely cannot see a frame of any sort coming off the spoiler, and its pretty doubtful they edited out the frame afterwards.

I was re-thinking about the angle of the car not changing also,
if the following camera car turned with fiesta to the outside of the bend it would still be perfectly perpendicular.

So now I'm starting to conclude that you're right about a camera car following the fiesta from behind.

i think ken block spent more time crashing out of wrc events than actually finishing them . probably because in wrc he wasnt allowed about 20 takes or attempts to get it right .
these block videos are now rather boring , the only nice thing about them is the fiesta and its bodykit . much prefered the original 1st video with the wide arch scooby , that was a real nice car .
    silly wrc crash by block

Nah, that shadow is the continuation of the cars cabin. You can see where the sun is going through the window and stops at the top of the concrete block and continues. Place yourself in a position where you are looking directly through the car side window and you would see it. The sun is also beaming from the wrong direction to catch anything behind the car for it show up at that position.

From being very definite about the shadow theory, some speculation about the recording method would be that there is also such a tiny section of the image that would need editing on a consistent grey surface colour to take the mounting arm off that I would not be surprised to see a couple of seconds of the movie getting edited to facilitate that "cool" shot. You're only looking at 50 to 100 frames. The only thing lending itself to the argument that it is a second vehicle is how late in the day it was recorded because that is utterly terrible workmanship to have such changes in daylight like that. It would have taken a long time to get that looking perfect.

They used a camera jib/ crane as well as a Quadcopter ( with x8 motor configuration, graupner wooden props)
one of these bad boys..with brushless gimbal, RED epic camera
Live video from the quad is sent to the ground via a video downlink.if you look closely you will see
the cloverleaf spironet antenna on the quad arm in the left of the pic( the 3x white tapes on the boom are holding the video transmitter and the aerial is left f this) Pilot operates the quad and second operator drives the camera tilt / roll

There's zero chance that the shot was anything other than a gopro attached to the car. Every single frame of the video from that perspective has the car in exactly (to the mm) same position relative to the camera, even when the car turns slightly.

Paint it a bright colour and it's not at all hard to remove in software, even with something as simple as Adobe after effects.

If you look at it properly, you'll see there's nothing on the car that could create that shadow. It's not any sort of continuation of the cars natural shadow. Even look at its position in relation to the rest of the cabin structure.

There's clearly a diagonal angle the shadows are being cast off at, it's not 90 degrees. Get something close enough to the rear of the car and it'll create that shadow.

It is the top of the doors window with the air scoop. :)
This is confirmed by the small light patch and curve of the shadow, you can trace the curve of the air scoop.

Not too sure why mention 90 degree angles, there isn't one in sight in relation to shadows being cast from the cameras axis.

    Anyway:

    - The cars shadow (rear) on the white and red wall is slightly ahead of the physical car from the camera point of view.

    - This establishes that the shadow is coming from the rear right corner direction (when sitting in the car and turning your head to the sun).

    - Any point where the straight termination line of the wall shadow is broken, the cause can only be something taller than the wall itself.

With these three points and the assumption that you are not arguing that the car has a very very short windscreen and perfectly flat roof where the car at no point is taller than the wall, the first object that could cause the termination line of the wall shadow to have a blip can only be the top half of the car. :)

It is all down to how close the camera is to the car and how it is zooming into the car, because we can not say there is no optical zooming going on. This is probably deliberate to keep the car in a nice part of the frame.

    I rest my case.

here's some pics from 32 seconds into the "making of" video before the mounts were edited out. ;)

    280736.jpg280737.jpg

    and here's the whole video.

it also answers the question about the shadow at the start being from the top of the car, NOT a chase car or gimble. :)

honestly, really not that hard in Adobe after effects at all, certainly a lot less work than went into most of the of it.
