I've never had one. Is there a cheap way to get one?

    Yes.

    Join a Golf Club.

    Play 3 Qualifying rounds.

Club Handicap Secretary submits Score Cards to GUI.

GUI sends out Handicap Cert & Club informs you of your handicap.

    Simples.

Ah ...... now that I read your post again.

    No, there isn't.

Would love to. Maybe next year.
What would be the best value cheaper courses in Dublin or north/northwest/west Dublin?

Don't know much about swords open and have only played silloge

I think there is great value above. When you think in Dublin most people are pay double or 3 times above a year.

But you would want to check if a GUI comes with them also - some you have to pay as you go.

Hmm.. I am not too far from Castleknock, and though I haven't seen the course have heard it's nice. Would definitely fancy membership there! Maybe next year!

    Is there Castleknock members here?

Try looking for distance memberships that come with a lower fee. Some can be as low as 150 a year. I know some of the clubs who offer it don't allocate the same rights as a full member though. Also most clubs have a first time club members price which is lower for those who have never been part of a club before.

The only way is to join a club but I take it you got that already admist all the unnecessary sarcasm.

Yeah got that Dan :) I presumed that was the case, thought I'd ask anyway.
    Cheers guys.

Distance membership at a glance seems good but I see that the Leinster Branch of G.U.I. are bringing forward a proposal for the A.G.M. that in order to be able to compete in an "Open Competition" a player must have returned a minimum of 3 qualifying scores in their home club.

Super Idea. If you have distance membership which i have no problem with and u are playing different courses each week there is no way you handicap is as accurate as someone playing in their home club week in week out.
Hollystown is another cheap option in the area u are looking at.
