Im in the middle of designing a homemade 5x180cm(2x72) belt grinder that will be used mostly for knife making but the parts im stuck on are the belt wheels and contact wheels I know I can buy them from the states but I rather buy here if the price is right. Does anyone know if they can be got here at all?

Apologies if this is the wrong section of the forum, figured since its DIY related it might fit.

    Regards Jon

I would talk to Aly. on Britishblades forum. You can buy the bits you need, or a whole grinder, over at http://downlandengineeringservices.com/

No that's one Aly was showing for knife grinding.

I use a canadian Viell 1" x 42" for sharpening and repairing broken tips and chipping.

Thats a handy little grinder, Iv some decent lenths of box section here in the workshop just the pulleys are they main concern might give Aly an e-mail there. For home use Im think a 1hp motor will be plenty for my needs?

Mine is a one HP with the speed limited to about 900rpm.
I'm only using it for sharpening though, not grinding knives out of forged or flat bar stock.
Some of the lads on BB use three HP motors with a speed control, more torque for hogging off steel with coarse ceramic belts.
I would join the forum and ask the lads who are doing this already what they would recommend, they've already made all the mistakes ;-)

No bother lad, look forward to seeing a new knife maker in Ireland!

Have you seen work by John Reck, Davy Moore and Rory Conner?

Will you be heat treating your own blades or sending them out for HT?

Have fun lad, and mind the fingers ;-)

I sure have checked their work and they make lovely knifes. The knife Im making is abit of a hybrid its a mix of a bushcraft/survival knife just something a little different

As for my first knife Iv a friend who is a farrier and il heat treat it using his gas furnace, he uses it to make horse shoes. Should be alot of fun.
