A question about my Lintel

We are putting in a stove. We want to put the stove into the firepalce and not onto the hearth.
The existing fireplace ,with fireplace inset removed and back to blockwork, isnt wide enough.I Proceeded to remove to widen the fireplace on one side by 1 block width which would have given enough room to insert the stove and line the blockwork with fire retardant material.
When I removed 1 width of blocks it turns out the Lintel is effectivley square and was being supported by that block width.I had presumed that the Lintel waould run all the way across the width of the fireplace but was mistaken.

Do I need to rebuild the support with the same size blocks (8 inch wide) or can I use a smaller 'brick' to build back up and support the lintel which should still give me enough room to insert the stove.
Obviuously what I need to do on one side has to match up with the other.
At present the lintle is supported at the back and on the other side.

is it a lentil or a firehead?

youd want to know what your at and whats what because you can risk the chimney emptying out into your room.

by making it bigger in width by one block will your stove no be not off centre in your new ope?

I was going to widen it one block either side which still leaves a block width to the edge.
The whole chimney is set into the room (like a reverse bay window if you get me)
I thought a firehead sat on top of the chimney?
This is sitting 75 cm off the floor and is rectangular in shape.

if its a modern enough house it should have a firehead which your clay flue liners sit into.

what size was the orignal ope which was there?

    Yep thats it.

The blockwork opening is 46cm and the stove width we were going to buy is 44cm.

will sitting lentils under the firehead as a support be to low for the height of your stove?

So.....Widen as planned but put a lintel at the front to support the front of the firehead?!?
    That may work.
Will have to measure the height of the stove.

you'll need more then one lentil..you'd be aswell putting in 3 or four..will depend how far back your flue exit is if you understand me..just make sure your lentil doesnt cross where the flue adaptor will go up to join the clay flue pots.
