I'd have to say my 01 Peugeot 206

The thing was a piece of junk to begin with. I had the car for about 5 months and then all of a sudden the gearbox went costing my almost 700 euro

Then my battery died when I was driving one of the days (nearly killing me)

    Then the head gasket went

Along with a lot of other stuff the repairs on the car cost me more than I paid for the car

There came a point where I had to leave it in to be scrapped

Extremely annoyed after spending 2 K on the car

    Who's next?

This topic has been done before, but just to add, a citroen xsara 99, 1.4, awful yoke altogether, everything went on it, I hadn't the money to buy a new car but always had just about enough on me to get it repaired, I learned a harsh lesson with that car.

Citroen Xantia diesel. Lovely car to drive when it was working, but cost me €2500 in a year for repairs, after buying it for €3000. This was in 2001. Having spent €5500 in a year, sold it for €1000 on buy and sell. Nervous day waiting for a phone call to say it calved on the way home to the new owners place...........
Still had a year and a half loan to pay off, bought a Merc. 124 300D off a builder,(it was an ex.Taxi as well) Hoovered out the cement dust and sand, and ran it without any issues for another 120k miles. Chassis cracked at 330 thousand miles, almost wept as she went for breaking.

206 aswell, hated every second of driving that thing, disgraceful excuse for a car.. I walked quite a lot during the ownership of the car as I was miserable every time I got into it

08 passat. Never gave trouble but it was possibly the worst handling, dullest barge I've ever owned. It lasted 3 months before I sold it and moved on.

    Mustang II mach 1..

    horrible horrible yoke to drive..

I remember once taking off the front bumper and nearly dislocating my shoulder when the weight suddenly came onto my arm.. m7st have weighed 50kg.. and the doors.. I think they had their own gravity..

The suspension was mach 1 spec out of the factory and had lots of upgrades over the years but was still rubbish beyond beleif.. 3 speed slushmatic and that engine was a huge disappointment. ..

    reliable enough though..

    MG ZR
1.4 105 bhp, awful yoke, think she had had a hard time of it, as when I got it it only did 25 mpg and had a horrible bodykit. We called her "twitch" as she was too twitchy.

Ended up selling it at a 50% loss (albeit only a few hundred quid)

Bought a brand new Seat Ibiza in 2000, back to the dealer about every 6 weeks for the year and a half i put up with the heap, course lost me b*ll*x when i sold it.
Wife had an Opel Corsa that was very unreliable as well.

They brakes always squeaked and at 50k the clutch was on way out sold it to a dealer and ran like hell all after i spent about 1500 on full body kit the first week i bought thought twas going to be a mint little thing  lol celtic tiger times

Jeep Wrangler 4.0 Renegade (1989 model IIRC). Total heap of sh1te, bad handling, drank fuel like mad, uncomfortable, bad starter, useless acceleration, falling apart from crap build quality.

I took it in as a part payment on a debt, had it for 2 weeks, then took me another 4 to sell it.

My Dad had a Vauxhall Viva in the 70's which deserves an honourable mention here, he had driven British cars for 15 years non stop up to that point, it made him change over to the then unknown Japanese which he drove for 20 years before settling on VW's. The Viva was epically awful, I learnt more swear words in the 6 months he had that yoke than at any other time in my life. :)

04 1.4l Renault scenic diesel. Great family car in some respects, roomy, loads of storage, great little touches like integrated sun blinds in the back, airplane trays for the kids etc, as well as automatic lights, wipers etc, and cheap to run, but my god, it was unreliable. In the time I had it, all 4 of the electric window motors died (the drivers one twice) the dash display(which is a digital display) went, the heater fan went three times during the really cold winter, driving with no heater and the windows open in -12 degrees is NO fun! The engine started giving me gyp one day, didn't appear to be serious, a few days later (before I'd had a chance to get it to a garage) I was driving to work down a dark country lane, when, BOOM! Engine blew up, bonnet blew off and bits of the cars guts all over the road. I got €400 for the thing for scrap. Heap of junk, I hated it from day 1. Swore I'd never buy a French car again..... And bought a Peugeot 407! :P so far so good, no issues to report.

I don't think that any of the cars that I own are bad. In the eyes of others they probably all are but none of them ever disappointed me and I definitely don't hate any of them.

The "worst" of them probably my Suzuki Samurai just because it needs a fair bit of work or the Ford Crown Vic I had in America which every part of the suspension was hanging off and had a blown head gasket.

Another Citroen Xsara (1.9 TD) to add to the list. Worst in terms of giving trouble, and a generally poor design. It's the design problems that I consider unforgivable, as the rest could happen to any car. I don't see how any engineer could look at one of these leaving the factory and think they've done a good job.
    • Terrible visibility in all directions. All the pillars are massive and create huge blind spots.
    • Poorly laid out controls - stalks too close to steering wheel, buttons at knee height etc.
    • Intermittent stupid problems - sometimes certain doors not locking with the central locking.
    • Impossible to get a perfect seating position, despite seat/wheel height and position being adjustable.
    • Stupidly narrow power band. Foot to the floor - nothing up to 2500rpm, then nothing again after 3000rpm.
    • Some unsolvable injector problems make for a smoky and uneconomical engine.
    • Another unsolvable starting problem - Something to do with glow plugs/relay but impossible figure out exactly what. Will only start after a specific routine is followed.

    Done already buuuut....

The old 406 was a complete electric nightmare and was a general dog of a car that was never minded
The 525i never worked right for the first year I had it and was constantly chasing electrical gremlins. Will it start or not? Hmmmm....
The Corsa 1.2 was hateful in every way conceivable and broke down every journey. Some feat to do achieve that!

03 Honda CRV - my first brand new car.
Now it never gave any trouble, it had lots of 'extras' and knick knacks but it was just dreary. I don't know if it was the dull grey and black interior or maybe the music-on-hold quality stereo, it was OK to drive although quite fond of petrol (which I expected).

I had owned 4 Hondas previously so I liked the brand.

Once the 'new car' buzz wore off I took a dislike to it and only kept it a year or so (and got a good trade in price too)

Renault Megane II 1.9 120bhp. Had an awful trouble with the engine, the thing was using more oil than fuel. I think it was the turbo but never got it sorted and just scrapped it. The OH had another Megane II (130bhp) and that was a good car. Never really gave any trouble apart from the routine maintenance and a very nice car to drive.

    I had a 96 1.4 megane.

Radio used to turn off exactly every 10 minutes. Master cylinder on the brakes went heading into galway (had to get back to dublin and then to tyrone on no brakes!!).

It had a couple of oil seals gone in the engine - one used to let oil fall on to the exhaust manifold - lovely smell of burning oil in the cabin.

Central locking gave up and then the drivers door would only lock from the inside, leading to me locking the keys in one day and having to break a window to get them back.

It ran out of petrol the day i bought it - not even enough to get me from the sellers to the petrol station (5 miles).

However - i loved that car. Started every morning, even the hardest frosts never beat her. Was super comfortable to drive and was quiet as a mouse ticking over...even the oul lad commented on how comfortable the seats were. Was also a miser on fuel and i drove her around the country as happy as could be!!

    1995 Rover 620

Great engine and comfortable, but the rest of the car so badly put together.

It squeaked, rattled and bits used to fall off and break at regular intervals.

    Skoda Octavia. From memory:

    Two dpfs
    Temperature sensor
    Two shocks
    Air conditioning compressor
That also took out the fan belt (saw the pulley in the rear view mirror)
    Door lock
Xenon auto levelling failed meaning a night in a hotel near Abbeyleix as I couldn't drive it at night as it was blinding everything on the road
Couldn't track the thing for love nor money meaning a severe appetite for tyres
Multiple creaks and rattles that in the end weren't worth bothering with it
Feeling like a right prick showing up at the service desk/calling for a tow again

The turbo blew not long after I traded it.

All of the above in 13 months. And I'm fairly certain I've forgotten one or two things there. At least I came close on breaking even on it.

    A 96 Renault Laguna 1.8.

Only plus point was it was comfortable. Everything that was possible to go wrong with it did go wrong.

Sold it to a traveller for €150 who said he needed it for a new engine. Counted myself lucky to get that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 555 ✭✭✭tim3000

My dad once owned a small Renault, this was the early 90s but the car was made in the 70s maybe 80s. Constant trouble with it, he finally got rid of it after it started leaking fumes into the car, nearly gassing him and his family of three small kids to death. I remember it well too.

He also owned some sort of ford fiesta that didn't go in reverse he haggled the guy down from 100 pounds to 90 due to this.

had lots of electrical problems also

2001 almera. Timing chain stretched so it was a bastard to start, engine mount went, gearbox made a grinding noise in reverse..

    What a heap...

My mate had one a few weeks age and it reminded me what a heap of crap they really are...

My partner had a Citreon Saxo 99 reg years ago. He hit a cat with the car one day. The cat survived the hit, but the car didn't. Radiator blew, water would not stay in the car. Total heap of s**t

I had a 2005 Focus Zetec a few years back. Driving along a main road one day and the bonnet lock failed, bonnet flew back splitting the wings & smashing the windscreen. Random incident. I had spent hundreds replacing the power steering pipe and the power steering itself just before this happened.

06 reg Peugeot 307 SW. Fail of a car. Doors locked themselves regularly while driving and would only open by taking the key out of the ignition and pressing the remote central locking. ECU went in it twice in two years. Engine light constantly on. Repeatedly told it must be a sensor issue. Problem wasn't identified by the time it was traded in. One day the automatic lights took on a mind of their own and flashed for a full journey. Cue lots of flashing back and angry drivers. Alarm used to go off unexpectedly and beep away until turned off manually. Electric folding wing mirrors would fold during a journey. Automatic wipers were constantly on the go. I could write a book on this car...

My current car is a 1.6D non turbo focus.

    Hateful, hateful car.
I'm sure only fleet and hire companies buy them.

Plus side, unbelievably economical, though I'd rather burn an extra 5er per tank for even a bit of power.
