What weight are you planning on towing

Jeeo grand cherokee diesel will give you around 35mpg and very high towing weight limit.
Also very nice place to be.

Ranger rover is also good not sure of mpg.

Toyota land cruiser has a good reputation.

The other stuf with 2.5 liter diesels can tow but have no acceleration and find it hard to overtake.

15k will buy you a good example in nearly all the major brands.

Look out for one with out tow bar as it will have had a much easier life.

What do you consider reasonable mpg? I have a Touareg and it is reasonable mpg, but my definition of reasonable us likely different to yours.

Also, consider the difference in Awd versus 4wd.

Some contenders in your price bracket:

    Santa fe
    Outlander
    Forester
    Touareg
    Xc70
    Xc90

They are all 2.5l or smaller.

Edit: you might pick up one of the newer allroads for that budget too.

Yes but it is a soft roader and cannot tow like the examples above

Main thing I'll be towing is a trailer mounted boom lift .They weigh about 1 - 1.5 tonne.I wont be towing it that often and don't want to be paying a fortune in fuel when I'm not towing .

A 4wd capable of safely towing 1.5ton is not going to be one that's easy on diesel.
I have an 06' xtrail now two years and tow 1-1.5 reasonably regular. It does about 37mpg and 30 when towing.

You tow 1.5 ton with a xtrail? That's impressive, has the clutch not gone yet? Surely that puts the combined car+trailer over the dgvwr

Also as for the MPG, 30 mpg is better than either of my cars get unladen!

the maximum towing weight of an X-Trail is 2000kg

What about a ford kuga. The reason I say it is the place my dad works bought a few new ones this year and they seem to be quite good. He spent about a week with one towing a boom lift so same as you and he found it good well able to pull it and average mid to late 30s mpg wise. The towing capacity on them is 2100kg. Maybe it wouldn't be jeepy enough but worth suggesting. If you want something bigger I'd go for the grand Cherokee nice merc v6 engine and will pull serious weight 3 tonne plus no problems.

Subaru Forester would be ideal. They'll do 40+ mpg on average and up to 50 on longer runs.

Can I throw In a nissan navara. Good power, very comfortable. Can off road well. Will do 35-40 mpg depending on how you drive

Will a navara really do 35mpg , I had one in 2007 and never paid attention to fuel economy on it.Ive thought about getting another one quite a few times as it suits my needs perfectly

Heh. Heh heh. Get a decent jeep. If thats a Niftylift or the like, you'll be under very little illusions that it's behind you - the sway is worse than the weight. They're long feckers. A van will happily tow them at lower speeds but if you want to hustle along, get somthing solid or the lift will be bossing you, not you bossing the lift. I tow mine with a Sorento. All g. Good mileage too. And navarras have chocolate engines.

If you stick to 60 mph you can get 40 mpg

You could get 40mpg even if you got out and pushed it.

    These only do 30mpg empty

My dad has had one since 2006. He's not a easy driver but it can do 40 mpg and normal driving you will get 35-40. And his is 180k klms with no problems

I do find that hard to believe, given that 30mpg is usually difficult to achieve in one of them.
Unless he was hypermiling, and even then unless you were doing cork-belfast I don't think 40 would be possible.

My dad bought the new model when it first came out 06. And I can't ever remember it doing 40mpg 30-35 mpg would be more like it. Although he only had his a year and it spent 4 months in the garage due to a faulty and sensor and they were so new out they couldn't get spare parts for them.

None of the big 4x4 do 40mpg
They are too heavy and aerodynamics of a brick and once they hit traffic or start pulling weight then 30mpg is only a distant dream.

Don't get me wrong I love 4x4 especially those with hi low transfer boxes but fuel economy isn't their strong point.

Exactly, anything in the landrover class would not do anything near 40 mpg. Only the "faux by 4" kinds will hit 40 mpg

You're looking at the high 20s for a Navara

OP why not get a 4wd van instead?

Can't remember what car it was think it was a mazda that described 4 wheel steer as AWD

But the rest of the motoring industry and common understanding is all wheel drive.

It gets confusing as 4wd can be full time or part time. It gets more confusing as off road vehicles refer to part time as 4 wheels engaged and full time as rear engaged and front only when slippage at rear.

The point being there is no standard each manufacturer has their own definition

To me 4x4 has the ability to drive front and rear axels equally. That is 50 /50 split in power

4WD is power going to all wheels all the time split may not be equal.

AWD the power is predominantly to one axle and drive only sent to other axle when needed.

Then there is variations on above and each manufacturer uses the termoligy they feel suits their target audience.
