Dipped Headlights Problem

While driving home this evening I dipped my headlights against an incoming car only to find that they both failed to dip and I was driving in the dark. Still had the high beams though. Pulled in, turned off everything and after 15 mins they're both working fine again. What would cause this to happen. Its a 04 fiesta btw.

Had same problem with my bora the other night, the drivers side headlight would stay on full. I got out and hit the headlight and it dropped to dim fine. Only seemed to dim whenever it got a bit of a shudder. Said it to a friend and he reckons its a faulty relay or something along them lines.
