Halfway through that having forgotten his name I thought to myself: He looks like a thin Ben Affleck. :o Dope.

Woody Harrelson was on Letterman during the week promoting this movie, for a funny guy, he chooses some really dark roles.

He does, doesn't he! And does them too darn well to IMO, scary. Maybe if he did not have this 'funny' background, would be actually be so scary?

Watched this last night and enjoyed it.
Its a bit slow at the start and the dialogue is muffled due to the accents and the fact that some of the characters are hillbillies but its a good watch ,the time flew by.

Bale is excellent as is to be expected ,as is Dafoe and Harrelson .
Its a vastly superior film to American Hustle which Bale is also in .

I agree i preferred it to American Hustle. The start is a little slow but it's to build up the relationship between Bale and Affleck's brother's really.

I think Bale gives his best performance in this, Hustle has the more showy role with weight gain and comb over. I think this has the more depth to it.

Harrelson is brilliant as the bad guy and Dafoe does slimy very well in a smaller role. Casey Affleck deserves some praise
even though he gets killed off halfway through
as Bale's younger brother wanting to escape his surroundings, the scene between Bale and him in the kitchen along with the opening are the films highlights. Also the great Sam Shepard as Bale and Affleck's Uncle is very good. Zoe Saldana is sadly underused as is Forest Whitaker in underwritten roles.

Saw this in its opening weekend over here, really looking forward to it after seeing the trailer, unfortunately I was bored to tears. I usually like slow paced character drama's but this dragged on and in the end I couldnt wait to get out of the cinema.

Having said that, Woody Harlson and Affleck put in some really good performances. Harlson has to be one of the most versatile actors around at the moment, I cant remember the last time he didn't impress. I'm a Bale fan, but this was too easy for him, the character didn't require much in the way of range.

Saw the trailer during the week and hoping to watch it this weekend

From the trailer alone with it's showing off of the cast & use of Pearl Jam - can't wait :)

Not great by any means. A whole lot of nothing happens in a build up to not much else happening.

Watched this last night and loved it.
Probably wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea though!

Just finished watching this. A big giant pile of 'meh' in all honesty. It plods along and doesn't really end up going anywhere despite the build up. Such a pity given the impressive cast on show.

Woody Harrelson is quickly becoming one of my favourite actors. His range is so broad and his acting over the last few years has been top notch.

Felt more for his character than anyone else despite him playing the villain in this case. I was enjoying Casey Affleck's character
up until the point when he gets killed off. It's a shame because the on screen relationship between himself and Bale was great and made for compelling viewing. Veered off after that.

    Good acting, weak plot.

I enjoyed this. Some great performances from Affleck and the extremely nasty Harrelson who steals the show. Felt this wasnt one of Bale's best performances, he was put to his limit when he had to feign tears chatting with his ex. A good solid laddish flick though. Drink, drugs, fights, revenge and if you ignore the holes in the whole thing it is very enjoyable.

Can't understand some of the negative comments. I really liked this film.

I loved the pace of the film also. My only criticism is that it was too short, as I feel certain aspects of the story needed to be fleshed out. Perhaps they were, and ended up on the cutting room floor. I hope so, as I would dearly love to see a directors cut down the line if that is the case.

I think Scott Cooper is a writer / director to keep an eye on, if this and his first film, Crazy Heart are anything to go by.

I really like it when a director makes such a violent film, but doesn't shove a dramatic score down our throat or use fast editing to create a sense of excitement. The violence here is surrounded by silence in many scenes and after very dramatic dialogue or shifts in the story, the pace of the next scene is often mundane. I like this as it feels real and a million miles away from a popcorn movie as a result, which is just how I like it.

Not suggesting it's a perfect film by any means, and it is most defiantly rough around the edges but it was a low budget film by today's standards ($22m) and so it can be forgiven for not be too polished on that basis I feel.

Have seen it twice now and enjoyed it even more the second time. You can certainly see how Malick's Badlands was an influence for Cooper. Release by Pearl Jam was such a cracking choice of song for the film's score also. Perfect in fact.

Interestingly, the indigenous people portrayed in the movie, who lived in the New Jersey mountains, actually exist. They were not happy with Woody's and Cooper's portrayal of them and so sued them. DeGroat was the surname of eight of the plaintiffs, which of course was the surname of Woody Harrelson's character.

Course, I myself preferred the Surname of the main character.

I watched this last night and I enjoyed it. It's a bit of a pointless movie but the acting is solid and it's worth a watch.

Just watched this and thought it was incredibly poor. Good solid opening half that leads nowhere other than a poorly written, cliche ridden plot. The last 10 minutes I was actually thinking "is this movie for real?" The first half and the second half of the movie are like two completely separate films.

Great acting - Harrelson is brilliant in particular - but not much else. Plot was weak and the script is completely subpar. Total waste of talent and a waste of time to watch as well.

Watched this last night and my immediate reaction was fantastic acting saving a pretty rubbish film.

I've no issue with a slow paced movie, that is fine, I get it, but when I thought it was going to build up to something fierce, it kinda never really got there for me.

There wasn't a single weak performance, and for that alone it's enjoyable. I'll always watched Bale, he's incredible in my book and this was no exception, but the rest of the cast were excellent aswell.

As someone said already though, big buildup to a whole lot of nothingness.

Never thought to post it when I found it a while back.

Here's that cover of the song "Heart of Gold" that you can hear in the trailer:
