Just back from there, it was my 3rd time going since they got in the new comfortable rocking chairs,

but the smell when you first go in is potent,

one friend's eye reacted to it and went completely red and another friend admitted she got a massive headache from the smell just now, does anyone else think its too much? is it the chairs that cause it or some new cleaning products?

either way it would put me off going there again tbh...

Heard somewhere its was something to do with the ventilation system.....
They paid load of money to fix it I think, but it didn't do anything.

    They're amazing.

Haven't been there in a few weeks though so I don't know anything about the smell.

I've been there recently and didn't notice any rocking chairs?! Are they only inside some screens or what's the deal?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 720 ✭✭✭calnand

Just back and noticed the smell, it's just the smell of New fleather and I imagine glue and other building materials in the walls. Really comfy seats though, and the screens are brilliant bow can't wait for the omnimax screen.

There not in all of them yet I don't think but they eventually will be.

I was there about a year ago and a man came into one of the screens with a staff member, and angrily shouted "CAN YOU SMELL THAT?", trying to get other people to join in.

He said: "EVERY TIME I COME TO THE OMNIPLEX, PAYING THROUGH THE ROOF, MY EXPERIENCE IS RUINED BY THIS SMELL. IT SMELLS LIKE SHÍTE".

    A few people nodded.

Then the staff member proceeded to explain how they have tried everything to get rid of the smell.

Yep, Totally agree. Was in there a few weeks ago and the smell was terrible. Hits you right in the face when you go in. I'll admit I get headaches really easily but I had a ferocious headache after the film. And during the film. Kinda smell that's hard to forget.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 880 ✭✭✭celica00

was there a week ago and no smell at all (but with the new seats)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,357 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

What are they doing at the moment where the Ben and Jerry's place was? Is it a new screen?

Yeah spotted that aswell, would love to know, since they have the omnimax signs plastered all over it I wonder is it something to do with that.

Surely I'm not the only one to leave mahon point cinema with a pain in my back and a headache after 2 hrs in their awful new seats? I can't understand for the life of me how this ever happened. One of the big pluses in mahon point were the comfortable seats.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 41 thecatburger

IS THIS REAL LIFE? Those new seats are ****in abysmal

I have heard it s going to be a Subway .

That's strange, I thought the Ben and Jerry's place was doing well enough, not that I have ever bought anything from there myself but it always seemed busy enough whenever i was at cinema

no they aren't, other than the smell, they are really comfy,

although i predict problems in busier screenings with kids placing their feet on your chair rocking you in an attempt to rock their chairs! :pac:

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 1,151 ✭✭✭rovoagho

What is the point of the rocking? Is it to help you off to sleep during chick flicks?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 986 ✭✭✭Bill-e

Can't wait to give these chairs a go!

Do they actually rock back and forth or is it just able to recline a bit?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,516 ✭✭✭Outkast_IRE

Ok they aren't really designed as rocking chairs, but they do rock a good bit, as far as I know its to help everyone find a comfortable position no matter how long or short your legs are etc.

I like them, have been to two films with them now and they work well in my opinion I also think there is an extra bit of leg room with them .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,120 ✭✭✭wheresmybeaver

Disappointed to hear the ben and jerries bar has gone, or are they just moving it? And why couldn't subway just move in to where Eddie rockets was?

They have moved it by the other tills, but with a reduced selection.

I havent been for months, but I did start to notice a humm developing in the place. Kind off like stale sweat. Really not pleasant at all. This new smell seems to be from the new seats by the sounds of it.

Had a go on these new chairs a couple of nights ago. I like them, didn't notice any particular smell form the chairs.

I forgot about the rocking though, and nearly catapulted the poor lad in front of me when I was getting up to go to the loo. Oopsie!

i don't think the smell is from the chairs themselves but rather the new cleaning products for the new chairs,

its only since these new chairs were installed i noticed (couldn't ignore it really it was so pungent) the smell.

its like an eye watering cleaning product smell,

was there sunday defp more leg room with them and there is a bit of a smell but not as bad as the smell that's was in some of the screens the last few years

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,719 ✭✭✭Bacchus

I like the new seats. Pity they are only in screen 2 (not in screen 1 or 3 anyway). Much more comfortable than the older seats. Didn't notice any smell. Love the new screen/projector in Screen 2 too, excellent picture quality. Hope they do the rest of the screens up to a similar quality soon too.

They are in screen 12 as well.

I was there this afternoon and got the smell alright. It wasn't great, but it stopped bothering me quite quickly.

Yeah. I mean, I've always got some sort of a smell in the place, but just like you have to leave a room for a few minutes and return to get the smell of fresh bread because you've become acclimatised to it, it's the same with that smell. It's there, but you get used to it fairly fast. Otherwise, people would just stop going there.

You can now choose your seats when buying tickets online. Whats the story here? Will there be a "reserved" sign on your seat, or will you have to shunt people off your seat? Not sure is this a good idea.

may only be active for movies that are just out and are in big demand. I remember Douglas Cinema (about 127 years ago) used to do this for new releases. I found it very handy to be able to book an edge seat but sure with the nature of the tiered seating in Mahon Point I can't see it being as important.

I went to the hobbit and it was completely full. They have ushers inside that will make you move if you're not in the right seats. I think booking seats is better than just turning up, avoids ending up in the very front row and straining your neck for the whole movie.

Ref the smell, yes they do stink, and at €9.20 a ticket I will be taking my custom elsewhere in future. They would have done better to leave the old chairs and TURN ON THE HEATING !!!!! You shouldn't have to wear a hat coat scarf and gloves at a cinema !

As long as there are ushers all the time though it will work. If not, it will lead to embarrassment and possibly conflict.

Was there last night and it seems that all the screenings have assigned seating now, at the ticket desk there are screens behind the staff showing where there are available seats - same as what's online I would imagine - and they ask you where you wanna sit.

I'd say most people stick to their assigned seats, but as soon as the lights go down its almost impossible to find them I'd say - a few latecomers were scrabbling around with smartphone screens lit up trying to find theirs.

I can't remember if there were ushers inside there or not.

The new layout is a bit weird though - with the ticket office right by the door, the queue to buy tickets was all the way out nearly to the door of Debenhams.

Not sure i'm gone on the new chairs, but the stadium seating is very good.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,357 ✭✭✭✭SteelyDanJalapeno

Yep, all seats are assigned now, wherever you pay for your ticket.

There is ushers there, but they didnt go hunting people, if ya cant find your seat they will show you.

Went to get tickets for Anchorman 2 but i was kinda late and there was maybe 25 - 30 seats left dotted all over the screen in single spaces.

Are the seat assignments only for evening screenings, or all the time does anyone know?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 667 ✭✭✭Karmella

I think I saw a sign saying that all screenings are allocated seating now

well I was over-exaggerating the age of the Douglas Cinema given the state of the place :D

Went in there for the first time in ages after the Christmas but during the day and thought the seats were quiet nice in fairness no smell from them. though the allocated seating was a bit much though I didn't even realise until we sat down that we were suppose to be somewhere else. Was well pissed off with them last night though went out for dinner and a movie first they forgot to give us the movie tickets in the restaurant then she wouldn't take them and the q's were back to the escalators wtf when did going to the cinema get so complicated. Defo prefer douglas or ballincollig Mahon Point is a fail

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,357 ✭✭✭✭leahyl

I don't get a smell from the seats anymore - I did the first time I went there when they had just got in the new seating but it's fine now.

I think the new layout of the cinema is a bit ridiculous - why didn't they leave it the way it was - the queue for tickets now goes all the way out into the main shopping centre which is kind of stupid!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,658 ✭✭✭Milly33

that's what it was like last night has turned me off going back. Why such confusion I was thinking it was because there were less tills but there isn't they just put them to the other side if not there seems to be more

    i hate assigned seating,

its a nightmare when you have children, you might walk in and go for your usual seats and if there is a tall person in front of those seats choose to move to a different row,

with assigned seating you now have no options if there is a group of adults sitting in front of your child.

i doubt they ask for heights when you are booking tickets?

They have boosters for the seats, although if the child is very small, they mightn't be much use.

those booster are uncomfortable and most children consider them to be 'baby seats'
with the way the seats are they can see without boosters anyway, unless an adult (or someone taller than the back of the seat) sits in front,

also with assigned seating i think it encourages laziness or people who come in late too, knowing the seat they want is there waiting for them, where with first come first served you'd have to go in early to get a good seat.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 31,222 ✭✭✭✭freshpopcorn

I think the assigned seating is a good idea because if your going to the cinema with a group at least you know that you'll a be able to sit together and you can also get good seats.
The reason they moved the ticket desk is because they are meant to opening a subway where the old ticket desks were.

Don't like the assigned seats system. Fair enough for popular films that are just out, but for everything else? Went there recently and there was a pair of langers behind us hilariously narrating every part of the movie. You could tell they were going to be a pain in the ass before we had even sat down, but we didn't have the option of sitting a bit further away.
