    Hello All,
Can anyone here advise on the do's and don't's of parking trailers in your fields on the side of a road and selling advertising space?
The NRA just finished with our place and have created and 4 lane bypass through our farm.
I'm looking into the idea of parking a few trailers at either side of the road(in our fields) and selling advertising space on them.
Any idea if there is a business model out there already for this.
    1)What type/size of trailers I would need?
2)Can the County Council stop this?
3)What sort of pricing I should be pitching this at
4)Who pays for the printing of the advertising
5)Typically how long is the advertising cycle etc?
6)Should I be including lighting etc?
7)How does one go about selling the advertising (is this a door to door thing?
Any advice would be much appreciated
I'm based in Kerry by the way.

NRA, Co Co's will chase you down for it, strange then when you see trailers parked in some fields for years on end. thats good land your farming there;)

in county louth this is not allowed, only way county council will allow it is if you are advertising a charity:rolleyes: they say it is taking motorists eyes off the road and could cause an accident

The theory is that a trailer is not a building or structure within the meaning of planning, and is parked on private property.

if you errect advertising you would need planning. the theory behind the trailers is they are temporary and dont need planning.
the ones i have heard about are the company who is advertising approaches the farmer, and supplies the artic trailer with advertising already done.
but it has been known for the company then to abandon the trailer after the advertising period is over and it costing the farmer to remove it.
The trailers that are used wouldnt have a test and would be at the end of their life. after standing for a few years the brakes will seize up making them impossible to move

A few problems you may face are
-cost of buying trailers if you supply them yourself, expect 1500-2000 as they can have a life as a bale trailer and would scrap out for similar, axels and wheels etc
-do you have access for 40ft artics to get them in.
    - the best advertising space will inevitably be in the middle of fields , you will lose ground, the contractor wont like mowing around them
-if you are told to get rid of them by the council and its winter you wont be able to travel the land to do so.
-if you are told to get rid of them and you have a contract with someone for advertising you will have to refund the money.
-i wouldnt bother with lighting as this will cost too much money, how much would it cost to buy install and run a couple of flood lights per trailer 12 hours per day
    - in the economic situation we are in a lot of companys wont have a lot of money for advertising.

if i were you id talk to a local co Councillor about the legality of having them there first, then if they are ok with it, advertise in donedeal looking for interested people, then let the company supply the trailer and advertising, under contract, if they abandon it/fail to pay etc , the title/deeds for the trailer transfer to you, then at least you can sell/break the trailer for parts/ scrap it and get something for it.

was coming from kilkenny to clonmel the other day and pulled in when the mobile phone rang

anyway had a look beside me when the phone call was over and see the gable of a shed in a farmyard with an advertising banner on it for something or other, thought it was a good idea on behalf of the farmer

Thanks 9935452, good point about rusty trailers being left in my fields. I had it in my mind to get 6 units of my own in, 3 on either side of the bypass. I also have an old farm house(not inhabited) which is in prime view when driving over the bypass which would hold a billboard perfectly(this I assume I would need planning if I were to bolt it to the side of the house?), similar to the one on the side of the main Cork/Kerry road opposite Kismet cottage on the county bounds, I think its for Quills in Killarney or somewhere similar.
I'm in the process of reseeding the fields where the trailers would be situated, the fields will only be used for making sileage round bales or haylage and in theory, the trailers could be used to store the haylage bails (these need to be kept dry etc...) so I could prove a case for having the trailers in the fields other than for advertising, if some company wanted to sponsor the tarp covers for a fee then I don't see which laws I would be breaking?

dunno about kerry co. co. but some councils are zero tolerence n others arent bothered. putting 6 in one go i wouldnt do though. why not put one on shed and one 40' for the first year n see how u get on. better to get paid for two for years than getting paid for 6 for 3 months!
we've a legit 40 by 8 sign (not on motorway) n get e1800 a year for it n a 20 by 8 trailer that we get 1k for. got fined 700 by the council 5 years ago for the trailer. handiest money we get all year!

oh yeah, if u contact the council first its game over before u start!

Not sure about national primary routes or lesser roads, but it is strictly forbidden on motorways due to safety reasons. Enforcement is getting slack on the M7 though...

Did you hear about T-pass castle when the owner went about and counted all the belvedere house signs. Judge told the council they won on a technical area but to play fair.

its €80 for planning for a sign. My moto is just bull on till they come out and then pay stupid. It works for them :D. And always look for a copy of there insurance, and safety statement, method statement and tickets. They fairly well pee off
