For my next car I'm gonna go for one of these but unsure of which one. Any lancer owners got any advice as leaning towards the petrol lancer against the diesel s40 as most of my mileage will be around town and country roads, lookin at an 08 upwards model for both

S40 has a much better quality interior but is smaller. Lancer will be more reliable.
You can get petrol s40s too

If you are considering a petrol car and doing alot of short trips then you probably don't need the hassle a diesel car.

Both cars are around the same size but that is pretty much where the similarities end. As a former owner of a S40 I can say that the maintenance costs will be higher than on the Lancer. S40 would definitely be a nicer place to spend your time in though.

    Volvo's 1.6 Is a PSA engine and it's rough.

The 2.0 Turbo petrol 180hp is an absolute peach of an engine, really smooth and quiet.

If you don't do the miles i wouldn't bother with the rough diesels, if you do the miles then consider converting to LPG as Volvo's love LPG.

LPG averages around 80C/L and some places give you 5C off if you convert with them.

Currently I could get LPG for 73 C/L.

At 80C/L it works out about 50 ish mpg in diesel terms.

Definitely worth considering, even if you don't do the miles to justify the diesel the LPG conversion could pay for itself after a year and worth it if you intend to keep the car over 2 years.

But you'd be very glad you went with the 5 cylinder petrol over the diesel.

    It was on gen I

    Shame.

I see it was a 2.4 Turbo on the Gen II and III.

All the more reason to get the S60/80

I wouldn't fancy putting a LPG tank in the boot of a S40, it's narrow enough as it is.

Ah, wasn't even on the 1st gen!

    S40 T4 and 2.0T were both 4 cylinder.

    2.5 Turbo on the S40/V50 ;)

You can put it in the spare wheel well. ;)

Roughly what age bracket are ya in, so I can get better scope of what could suit you?

S40 and Lancer are from the class below in terms of size to the likes of a Passat. S40 boot is average for the class but access to it is very narrow. If boot space is a priority then you should consider a hatchback or estate in that class of car or look at the likes of the bigger Passat.

Actually you should consider the Jetta, the boot is pretty big in them if you don't want something as large as the Passat.

As bazz said a nice jetta SE Would meet your requirements, basically a golf with a boot, Vectras always do it for looks anyway, especislly the high end specs, vauxhalls tend to go for peanuts too... but I'm giving two different classes of cars there (size wise)
