Thinking of cycling to Athlone tomorrow from Dublin ,
Will this kind of a head wind just make the spin miserable ?

Considering that temperatures are going to be in the range 6 - 10C and you're facing into a steady headwind, it might be a bit miserable. It's not particularly windy but it'll feel damn cold.

If your average speed is 25kph you'll be facing into it for at least 5 hours.

I've done Dublin to Athlone about 6-8 times this year. Its relatively flat so if you are facing into a head wind its not as bad as say going around wicklow.

This day had a fairly bad head wind. It can be done but it will take time and you will need to be layered!

I was planning heading down this weekend as well but have something else to do first

you cycled for 5 hours solid against a headwind and still averaged 30kph?!

What was waiting for you in Athlone?

Is that Wind guru site a bit of a drama queen?
I downloaded it because it looked very good.
Chose last night instead of tonight for my evening spin because the winds, according to wind guru, look like they could hit 64kmph tonight.
Met Eirean also says there are going to be strong winds tonight, but only hitting 40kmph.

However - at the moment it suggests winds of 21 - 33kmph with gusts of 41 - 54kmph yet the leaves aren't even moving on the trees?

Also, hope your Athlone cycle went well :)

The quoted winds are at a height of 10m over open country. Ground level winds will be usually around half of that (though the full speed of a gust can get down to ground level at times). Once you have trees and buildings around, the wind gets seriously messed up so you could have a tree sitting still with a gale blowing up the road.

    That makes sense - thanks

i used windguru sailing and its really accurate , so id trust it , sometimes it defaults to Hawaii so check the location !

Cycle was tough , I was late leaving the house and the wind was a biatch added to that I got a bit lost between Enfield and Kilkock , just about managed to hold the 30kmph avg but my HR was through the roof

Best bit was where I got behind a tractor/trailer for 5km , doing 38kmph , HR back down to normal

    Good training though
