Hello just wondering is it possible to over tension / tighten the rear derailer adjusting barrel? If so what are the indications that its too tight?
    Thanks

Would say it's perfectly possible, but if you're hand tightening it should be easy to undo. When I'm adjusting ore replacing a derailleur, I will leave the barrel mid-tension, pick up the slack on the bolt catching the cable and then re-tension with the barrel adjuster, of that makes sense.

If it's too tight, gears will slip or be skipped.

If in doubt, derailleur manufacturers have good tech documents on line, or try shelbonbrown.com, the sage of all things bicycle! http://www.sheldonbrown.com/derailer-adjustment.html

Tensioning the cable results in the adjusting barrel being screwed out, it will reach a point where the adjuster is no longer threaded so any more turning will have no effect. Screwing the barrel in will result in cable slack until the barrel is tight and cannot be turned.
