He heard it from some one at work, canteen talk. I thought maybe companies would give discount as driving being recorded and GPS on most cams on playback would give speed on incident and it would be irrefutable evidence.

    irrefutable evidence.

Why so, there can be more that one angle in an incident?

Yes true true, guess it would only be good for a frontal collision, one would need 2 cams, one for rear viewing.

I wasn't aware of insurance companies offering discount for dash cams.

I have a dash cam mounted in the car, It has been used before, thankfully not my accidents, just accidents I was witness to. The biggest problem with them is having a certified tamper proof software for extracting the information

certified tamper proof software for extracting the information
What do you mean by that is it you cannot go over recordings yourself to view them?

No it means that there is a certified method of extracting the video and the GPS information so you cannot tamper with it.

It would need to be an encrypted file that is downloaded from the cam that has been certified for forensic use. The idea being that you could download a file but you cannot tamper with it.

Sounds OTT, what if Gardaí arrive within minutes, and you just hand over SD card!!

I mentioned it last January to my insurance company when renewing. They said "a dash what?". Never mind.

This is related to Russian Insurance, in Russia when you insure you car you must have a car-cam fitted, Insurance is not mandatory like in Ireland. Go on Youtube and you will see loads of Russian carcam videos (about 90% of carcam vids are Russian). People think Russians are crazy drivers and the reason is they are always getting caught on video due to the proliferation of car-cameras in the country for insurance purposes.

My insurance company wouldnt even take my €800 security system into account; its wishful thinking that an insurer in Ireland would take something like a dash cam into account Im afraid!

I had a thread about this a while ago when my insurance was up.
I'm with AXA and I told them I have a dash-cam fitted to the car, they said this would not change my insurance premium as they still need to do their own investigations on it.
In all they said it would just help speed up the process but does nothing to the premium.
You can always try, worst you will hear is a no.

As a comparison, my wife's father also has one in Poland, his insurance didn't care either so it's not just Ireland
