Would you crown me King?

Imagine I was an incredibly wealthy Irish citizen, to the tune of say €30 billion.

If I made an offer to the people of Ireland to personally pay off our bailout debt as well as make a €10 billion stimulus injection into the economy in exchange for being granted the title "High King of Ireland", would you vote yes or no?

Basically I would take over the jobs of our current President (It wouldn't be an absolute Monarchy, we'd retain the Oireachtas and everything) until my death (it wouldn't be a hereditary title) at which point it would revert to the current system.

So good people of AH, would you vote Yes or No in the referendum which would obviously be required? (Hopefully a mod will add a poll)

    And don't worry, I promise I wouldn't feck it up :P

TL; DR: Would you make me the King of Ireland in exchange for an end to the recession?

Yes, what's the harm. The president has no powers anyway.

The government would just borrow more again and we would be in the same place in 20 years. The way things are people may change how the vote and their expectations. I doubt it though.

For a start you'd need a couple of hundred billion more just to pay off the national debt.

If you just made beer free and gave everyone good internet we'd definitely go with it.

Considering the caliber of many of the contributions around here by potential voters then it would be no worse than democracy. It also solves the difficult 'where do we find money for nice things while not carrying out revenue gathering exercises' conundrum that perplexes the usual loons and gobdaws around here.

Believe it or not, that was an actual job under some kings, such as Henry VIII - who was huge and ate a lot, and therefore needed some help dropping the kids off at the pool. Your official title will be Groom of the Stool. In early years it was exactly as you imagined it, but the job evolved in to a more general assistant role, since the Groom would be privy (?) to all sorts of secrets ...

If the OP got his way, I imagine he would also want to revive the medieval custom of Droit du Seigneur ... ;)

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

30bn? Come back when you have 300bn, then we'll talk.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 141 ✭✭Drained_Empty

yeah seriously? 30 b? it would be gone in two weeks. 300b or maybe 3000b.

maybe 30b and king for ayear?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 27,349 ✭✭✭✭super_furry

That 30billion would only work out at less than €6,500 for each Irish person. You'd need to up that to about ten times that.

See it wouldn't be divided amongst the population, it'd be used to pay off the bailout money while the stimulus would get us into some growth

Twitter floats today for 30bn, something you're not telling me OP?

The position comes with a complimentary monocle.
