moving2canada.com has a page about where to stay when you arrive:
    http://www.moving2canada.com/living/hostels/

They also have a place where they rent out rooms in Vancouver:

I used airbnb.com when we got here, worked out well but more expensive than hostels.

I came to Canada alone, too. I was nervous at first, but then made some new friends, every thing turned out good.
You can book YMCA or YWCA for stay at first, as they are cheap, and you can meet people there.
In my experience, one month should be enough of time to find your future home.
Most of people use craigslist and kijiji for finding apartment or share house.
I also find www.rentalguru.ca is very helpful, and very easy to use.
Enjoy your new life in Canada !
