    Hi

My question is if he buys a car in the uk lets say monday, gets it delivered back and doesn't drive it till January 2014, can he vrt it in january to avail of the cheaper vrt?
    Thanks

VRT booking must be made within 7 days of bringing the car to the country. And appointment must be withing 30 days of bringing it.
So only legal option for your friend is to bring the car to Ireland at the beginning of December, and book VRT inspection for beginning of January.

Just on this - will the VRT automatically fall on the 1st of January - ie, is it calcualted per year or per month from the date of first registration. I ask, because i was thinking of going to UK for a car soon (my own is on last legs) - but it the OMSP drops on Jan 1 maybe i should wait !

The OMSP could go down, it could also go up. Revenue have pretty much a free reign on what they want to set it at.

Most likely it will go down.

However vrting vehicle in January might be up to 10% more expensive then VRTing it in December (the same year).
So even that car might loose substantial amount of value on 1st January due to fact that it's one year older, I wouldn't expect too much reduction on VRT.

It usually drops slightly every month, with a slightly bigger drop at the New Year.
However they do monitor the stats of what is being imported (and even what people are getting online quotes for) and they will usually increase the VRT on a particular model if they see an increase in imports, and more online quotes.
