    Looks like it'll happen...
A US REMAKE of RTE drama Love/Hate is set to be announced within the next few weeks, the show’s Irish creator has revealed.

Writer Stuart Carolan today confirmed reports that producers are in talks with their US counterparts on making a new version of the hit show set in the States.
“It will be remade,” he told the Pat Kenny Show on Newstalk. “It’s only a matter of weeks before it’s announced.”

    More here: http://thedailyedge.thejournal.ie/love-hate-us-remake-1164413-Nov2013/

Do you think it'll translate well? Obviously it will have to be a cable show (as opposed to network)

"Can I get anything for you Tommy?"

"Uh, yeah, can I have a can of Dr Pepper?"

I don't exactly get what there is to remake?

There's no stand out core idea (breaking bad/Dexter/the office) within the show.

Won't it just be a show about the criminal underworld in (insert American city).

Brían F. O'Byrne's other show the excellent and underrated Brotherhood covered many the same themes and storylines as L/H

Don't think it'll work. And unless Carolan is writing it, no interest.

Just finished watching brotherhood on netflix, great show and I agree that it covers much of the same ground as love hate. I think love hate is an excellent show by rte standards but I don't think there is anything particularly original about it when you pit it against some of the popular American shows down through the years.

What's the point? Will the US public be sold on something because it's based on an Irish hit show? As already said, there's no unique premise that I can see either, so if there's any ideas someone wants to rip off what's stopping them?

There are a million and one different crime/cop shows that have been made over the US, I don't see how this "remake" will be any different to what has been already done. Unless there is some Irish backdrop to the show, in which case will be more than likely horrifically done.

Why they'd pay royalties to the writers for a show in which the genre has been done to death is a mystery.

"US producers had been attracted by Love/Hate’s viewing figures and audience share here, Carolan said. Sunday night’s episode had an average viewership of 872,000 and a 52 per cent share of the TV audience"

This makes no sense ... the US TV market which is the composite of hundreds and hundreds of individual markets from coast to coast bares no resembles to how the Irish TV market which is much more homogenous. I cant imagine any legitimate US producer who would think there was any kind of shot of gaining even a sliver of a 52% share of a TV audience. Even at it's height, a show like Friends got an audience of 26 million people in the mid 90's (Out of a population of 250 million) and the TV market is even more segmented since then.

Love/Hate's is decent but it's by no means amazing or worthy of replication and the only reason it gets such high viewership is that there is a lack of homegrown drama on Irish TV so anything halfway decent will the devoured so this says more about the lack of quality drama on Irish TV than it does about the quality of Love/Hate.
