Where might I get a couple of replacement bolts?

I went to get the car tracked a while ago and was told one of the bolts that secures the ends onto the rod was missing! I'm guessing the last place forgot to put it back on(!)

Anyway, upshot is I need a new one and I've tried various local DIY places and fastener companies, and the main dealer, and none of them have the right ones in stock. I managed to get one of a lower tensile strength (8.8 - original was 10.9) as a temporary measure, but I don't want to leave it on permanently in case it's not strong enough.

I've attached a pic with the bolt specifications on (taken from the bolt on the other side), so if anyone knows where I might get a couple (good to have one spare) I'd be grateful. I thought I'd be able to pick some up online fairly easily, but no luck yet.

I get the dealer to order them in for you or failing that go to a breakers yard.

Thanks for the suggestions. I checked out the links and it seems like I can't just order just a couple of bolts, or the cost of postage would be prohibitively expensive. I might be better off buying a new tie rod end and using the bolt off that. At least I'd have it for the next time they need changing.

I asked at a breaker's yard, and they looked at me like I had two heads. I got something else I needed there, so at least it wasn't a completely wasted journey.

Why is it that some people like to come up with complicated solutions to simple problems?

If you had ordered the bolts at the main dealer when you started this thread you would have had them long ago.

It would have taken less energy than starting the thread as well :pac:

after waiting 3 weeks for a MAIN dealer to get in a part I decided to look on line

sourced the part in NI delivered to my door in 36 hours €45 less than quoted here

    no energy wasted

youre in the trade and most likely get vip treatment but the way some main dealers treat the ordinary joe soap is not on

I deal with main dealer parts departments every day. Some know me yes but a lot don't. I have never had too much bother getting bits off them, even the ones who don't know me from Adam.

    another small example

glow plugs for the jeep €50 at my nearest motor factors 14 miles away
€32 delivered in the door from the UK in 48 hours

sorry for going off topic but at stage I'm pi$$ed off by the prices and service from some dealers here , then they are crying about going out of business

That is a discussion for another thread. Nothing to do with the OP.

Because I already asked at the main dealer, and he advised me to buy a new tie rod assembly just to get the bolt. I also found it difficult to believe that their service garage didn't have any of these bolts spare (I offered to pay).

I had no idea it would be so difficult to source a couple of bolts in this day and age.

OTOH, the fella that tracked the car presumably does plenty of track arm replacements etc, so why didn't he have one spare? Main dealers seem to me very tidy places where stuff gets binned to keep it that way.

Hey good luck with it, and that 3 weeks wait is pretty bad. I've often ordered up bolts n stuff, never longer than a week waiting.

What kind of car is it?

    It's a '99 Daewoo Lanos.

I took off the wheels last week to check that the rod end bolt was the same as the bolt I need. Unfortunately, the threads were larger, so that option is out. I also noticed that the temporary bolts I sourced (of a lower tensile strength) were already starting to rust, so I took one of them off and replaced it with the bolt I already had, and cleaned and greased up the other one.

I contacted the main dealer again to see if he could order the bolts. I gave him the part number in the parts catalogue I have, but he said it wasn't a valid number. He again suggested buying the entire track rod arm - quoted at around €45 (and there might have been VAT on top of that)!
I emailed him on the picture from the parts catalogue (attached image - labelled number 5 on the diagram) on Wednesday to see if that would help; he replied to me asking for the car reg. number, but I haven't heard anything back since I sent that on.

I will call to the place where I'm going to get the tracking done and see if they have any spare bolts, but at this rate I think I have more chance of finding a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Print off your picture and go to a scrap yard breaking a lanos. Check part-finder.ie and e-mail it to a breakers. Check done deal/adverts for someone breaking one.

You would buy a full tie rod in a breakers for a tenner if they won't give you the bolt.
