JXD S7800b or GCW-Zero?

I'm very conflicted. The JXD is out now. Heaven knows when the GCW-Zero will get released (probably 2014 I feel). There's a site called dinodirect selling the JXD for €110 but only until Nov 10. Of course it's coming from HK and there's the customs issue. The GCW looks to have a much better build quality though and is more respected due to it being open source and Linux.

Just wondering if anybody has any advice? Maybe everybody's saying "never heard of either of 'em! :D

GCW-Zero has the proper 4:3 aspect ratio which is important for retro gaming on a handheld. It also supports SDXC up to 64GB so you can jam that thing full of your legally owned roms :)
The JXD S7800b is also decent for playing retro games but its more suited to running modern android games in my opinion.

So GCW-Zero if its mainly retro stuff you want to play or the JXD S7800b if you'll be leaning more towards modern stuff but still want to be able to play some retro goodness.

The screen size of the JXD S7800b is twice the size though, so setting the aspect ratio to 4:3 isn't much of a compromize, the thing looks huge!

That would make the GCW-Zero much nicer to hold though, although the pathetic 320x240 resolution is seriously limiting if you're playing early PC games.

Well not exactly "early" PC games, but some of the mid 90s games like Duke3D etc...

You mean the best resolution for handheld retro gameplay? :)
Most retro consoles and handheld emulators look really nice on 320x240 as long as its a decent quality screen.

GCW Zero isn't even available yet I don't think. The dudes still sending out the kickstarter units. Its also mips based so any chance of getting decent psx or n64 emulators is pretty low.

Ironically, both of those consoles use MIPS based processors...

Yeah, with the GCW Zero you're probably topping out at SNES/Megadrive/NeoGeo levels. Maybe more once we can actually see what it can do.

  • From the comments of the posters over at dingoonity I'm getting the feeling the GCW-Zero might never be available. I was kinda looking at the JXD s7300b as a compromise between the two I mentioned. Smaller than the s7800b, cheaper and well received.

There doesn't seem to be any decent handheld focused on homebrew and emulation. I broke then analogue stick on my caanoo a while ago and the only halfway decent alternative I've found is the pandora which is way too overpriced.
