"Joe Duffy On Drugs". That's what radio insiders are dubbing a new phone-in show to rival RTE's Liveline.

Going head to head with Joe Duffy, the new phone-in will air from 1pm to 3pm on multi-city station Classic Hits 4FM from Monday with host Niall Boylan.

"We are going to do controversial topics on daytime radio which Joe Duffy would never touch," an insider on the 4fm show told the Herald.

The same station was recently rapped by the Broadcasting Authority of Ireland (BAI) for not challenging racist remarks from callers.

Boylan (48) is taking over the afternoon slot previously presented by Dave Harvey to host the new show in addition to his late night programme, which will see him on-air four hours a day on Classic Hits 4FM.

"Niall is planning on doing something totally different during the day. It will be Liveline but with Joe Duffy on drugs," added the source.

Classic Hits 4FM recorded a 24pc growth in daily listenership in this week's JNLR figures.

The move of late-night host Niall Boylan into daytime radio is sure to alarm rivals Adrian Kennedy and Jeremy Dixon who recently departed their night-time FM104 Phone Show for a daytime slot with station 98FM.

In fairness to 4fm they dont hide away from topical issues unlike duffy who doesnt like anyone getting upset or offended.

Two shows in the one day? Am I reading that right? Surely that's overkill.

Yes, it's four hours currently (9pm to 1am), so either the Herald is right and the night time show is getting shortened or he'll now be on air for six hours a day.

Ah right. I bet it turns out to be a damp squib. Its simply not possible to sustain outrage over 20 hours every week. The returns will always be of the diminishing variety.

    Wasn't he doing 20 hours a week all along? 4 hours a night 5 days a week??

I'm not to sure when the last time they did a full 4 hour show at night nor a full week of live shows either. Between playing repeat show's and going in for 2/3 hours for a live show some nights they aren't putting in near the hours they were a year or so ago.

He's a few days into this day time show now and if he and Hogan his producer continues along the lines it has been so far with the same callers banging the same drums that do be on the night time show and have been for a long time now I can't see Duffy or RTE sweating over it. At the moment it's just a watered down version of the night show. Grand for the listeners that never heard him or his 9/10 regular callers but I'd imagine they'll get tired listening to them in time.

It looks really bad for a radio station to have the same presenter on twice per day ! http://classichits.ie/schedule/

Wow, just checked the schedule? Is the night time show a repeat of the daytime output?

Otherwise Boylan is doing , what, 6 hours of talk show a day? At two different times?

Jesus, that would burn out any presenter.

"On Drugs" is such a lame phrase, it's even worse than "on acid."

Is David Harvey not coming back ?

Not to sure how a 'shock jock' fits into 4FMs daytime schedule.

Don't think Joe or anyone else for that matter has much to worry about.

He'll be back...then he'll leave again...then he'll be back by popular demand, then he'll get sacked for low figures...then they'll bring out "Classic David Harvey" and then bamn! gone again.

Probably not far from the truth! He only lasted two months this time.

    http://radiotoday.ie/2013/11/david-harvey-takes-another-break-from-4fm/
After just two months back on-air at Classic Hits 4fm, David Harvey is off taking another break from the station.

He’s told RadioToday that he’s enjoyed working with the team there but will now concentrate on other commitments such as his TV work.

Programme Director Andy Matthews is sorry to see him leave, telling RadioToday: “We will miss David and his quirky sense of humour and his sharp wit.”

David said: “I enjoy working with the station and the team and I appreciate the difficult situation I have placed you in but thanks for your understanding.”
