    I just bought a second hand 6x4 single axle trailer at the weekend. It has no brakes - is this illegal? Do I need to get a registration plate (similar to my car) on it?

    Moved out from an older thread.

    Small trailers – lights, reflectors and their installation, towing coupling and its installation, and brakes (if gross weight exceeds 750kg). In addition, the lights, tyres and towing coupling must be approved to European standards by the supplier and e-marked.

    Yes, as long as your car is permitted by the manufacturer to tow un-braked trailers (90+% are for loads <750kg). The owners manual will specify braked & unbraked towing capacities

    I don't see anything there regarding the need to display the car registration plate on the back of the trailer.

    Have a look here;
    http://www.irishstatutebook.ie/1992/en/si/0318.html
    the requirement to have a number plate on a trailer is is there.

    ...also I think 'Mullingar' misread illegal as legal, you are permitted to tow an unbraked trailer with a design gross weight (most single axle 6x4's) not exceeding 750kg, provided the towing vehicle is rated for this.

    Cheers mgbgt1978, I thought it was mis-read.

    And thanks for confirming the reg plate - must go see where I can get one of those now.
