Pedestrian Crossing

    Hello,

First of all sorry if this is not the right forum for my question, if it's not, feel free to my question to the appropriate forum.

I have a question regarding crossing this road http://goo.gl/maps/nvYIM . The closest pedestrian crossing controlled by light is 200 meters away, therefore is it legal to cross that road from the point I sent in the map (on the bus stop), or pedestrians have to walk 200meters to the crossing lights in order to cross the road ( eg walk 400meters instead of just crossing the road).

I couldn't find the answer in the rules of the road, therefore would appreciate if I can get an answer.

    Thanks a lot!

I'd assume it illegal to cross the road there. Besides that road looks like a deathtrap, you'd be taking your life in your hands crossing there.

If you're driving, you'd still have to let the pedestrians pass, even if they are in the wrong.

    Thanks.

Are you sure it's illegal? The closest crossing spot is 200 meters away and it would make it 400 meters just to cross to the other side.

In the middle of the road, there is the white marking separating traffic from both site, therefore this can be used by pedestrians crossing?

I had a look at the rules of the road and didn't find any specific information about this.

    Thanks

It would be illegal to cross there and it does also look very busy. 400M is not going to kill you, a car might. The white markings in the middle are nothing to do with pedestrians. You'll not get anyone responsible telling you it's ok to cross there.

Is it illegal to cross the road (other than motorway)?
Stupid, mad, careless etc but illegal???

Point taken and duly corrected thanks . But as usual and quoted it's not enforced or it seems enforceable.

With reference to the OP, I'm still not seeing where it's Illegal to cross at the point described once due care is taken etc etc.

    On that page it states:
    (7) On a roadway on which a (…) [pedestrian crossing] has been provided, a pedestrian shall not cross the roadway within 15 metres of the crossing, except by the crossing.

According to the OP the crossing was 200 metres away..

Does this mean that we must use the pedestrian crossing only if it's available in less than 15 meters away?

Since the closest pedestrian crossing in 200 meters, then I assume it's fine to cross the road?

I agree that walking 400 meters is safer than crossing the road there.

Just wanted to understand if it's illegal to cross or not, as I was unable to find this information online.

    thanks

A Garda can apply this section of the law at there discretion

"46. (1) A pedestrian shall exercise care and take all reasonable precautions in order to avoid causing danger or inconvenience to traffic and other pedestrians."

or they may, as the afore mentioned article suggests, choose to apply this

"It has proven possible, to a degree, to bring charges where behaviour amounting to breach of the jaywalking provisions can also give rise to other charges under the Criminal Justice (Public Order) Act 1994."

Do Gardaí do this often? Not proportionally to the amount of occurances.
Have I seen people being cautioned for jay waking? YES, several times.

If you want to cross the road there, it is your choice. People on Boards can not predict how a Garda will choose to apply a certain law. If you were to cause danger or inconvenience to traffic, a Garda will not care that 'someone on Boards said it was OK.'
