Is 6 to 7 feet adequate distance or should I go further back? It's a standard definition tv

Closer, 27' is very small by todays standards

OP has SD tv, so why link to a page titled 'Optimum HDTV viewing distance'?

Anyway, nobody should need to be told how close to sit to a tv they already own. Just sit where you feel most comfortable viewing. I would have though those viewing distance guides are for people buying tvs to decide what size will suit the space they have available.

I'd say a 27 foot screen is pretty big myself :D

Depends on if it is Wide screen or 4:3.

    Or IGNORE diagonal!
2.5 x screen height is a good guide. A 27" wide screen needs to be closer than a 26" 4:3 screen.

If detail is lost but picture sharp you are too far away.
If the picture always looks fuzzy you are too close or need glasses :)

Computer screens/ Laptops /Tablets are much sharper (more dots per inch) as the are designed to be used at normal text reading distance no matter what size they are.

The guidelines (which are only guidelines) are only for video/film/animation/photo slide shows etc.
