How to reclaim customs duty/tax?

I bought shoes from online and they came from the US, they came through UPS. They costs approx. €90 and I had to pay €49.93 customs/import tax on delivery to the UPS guy. I'm now returning these shoes back to the company I bought them from in the US, how do I reclaim this heavy import vat/tax I had to pay for it? Do I contact UPS? It has literally only been a day since I received these shoes. Do I send it out through UPS? I received an invoice of the import tax or vat I had to pay.

You can't as you have taken delivery. The fact that you want to return them is of no consequence to customs.

Actually it is; OP you'll need to reach out to the customs office on how to reclaim it as UPS acts on their behalf only and they will not deal with the refund.
