I was after a TV to replace my old DVD/TV combo for the bedroom for a while.

I decided that I'd go down the smart TV route, as a big user of Netflix and YouTube, I figured I would definitely get the moneys worth out of one.

Argos are selling these 22" Samsung ones, full hd , free view and smart TV capabilities too.
    http://www.argos.ie/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10152&catalogId=14551&langId=111&productId=511032

I've had it since Thurs, and am really pleased with picture and sound qualities, the WiFi is pretty responsive on it too.

Just thought it might be of interest to a few boardsies what with Christmas just around the corner etc.

Also worth mentioning that Argos give a €10 gift voucher with these, so that's essentially a tenner off the asking price.

    Really nice telly IMO.

Cheaper than many online retailers too.

€280 at Argos. €263 delivered from Amazon. I'm afraid it doesn't make bargain status even with the €10 voucher.

Personal preference I suppose, but for those that prefer to walk into an actual bricks and mortar store (should something go wrong/can't wait on the Amazon delivery) the seven euro price difference might be irrelevant.

I think the point is that this is the normal price for this set and therefore not a bargain.

You can walk into Currys and get it for the same price

It's still a bargain in Currys.

However. Argos give ten euro gift voucher with theirs.

280 is a bargain for the TV regardless of where it's bought IMO.

I think what they are trying to say is It's more of a 'Good Deal'.

For it to be a bargain, the price at place A, is much less than the price every where else.

I got the 32 inch version of this from Amazon, its an excellent TV,with great features got it 60 euro cheaper than any B and M store and delivered free in 2 days.Plus their returns policy is the best in the business IMHO

Not sure why people want these 'smart' tv's.
Only advantage i can see is Netflix built in, but can just use the PS3 or Laptop for this.

    Is there any other reason?

Personally I don't need the hassle of unplugging my Xbox from the living room, carrying it all upstairs, then setting everything up so that I get Netflix on the bedroom TV.

I Don't like watching movies on laptops either.

    That's the main reason.

But for me i would just use Netflix on the laptop, and hook it unto the TV.
The extra price for the Smart features do not justify it imo.

Thee is a lot to be said for having these smart features built in and designed to work with your normal tv remote. I have tried all of the alternatives mentioned above and using a smart tv is a much nicer experience

A R. Pi (£28 delivered) can work with your normal tv remote too :)

A smart TV is much handier. One remote and one box and all that. You can also play movies from a HD, (wider file support) and use DNLA with your mobile or tablet. Its just nicer and slicker as others have said. But its won't be kept up to date like a open box like the Pi. But you can use a Pi with a smart TV so you can have the best of both worlds.

I don't think you can get netflix or any of the other tv streams (4od iplayer etc) on that. I did try xbmc on pi but it couldn't handle streaming HD video from my media server, the built in client in my TV does though!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

Didn't realise you could pick one up that cheap

You're going to need a SD card, a USB charger/PSU, case, remote. In addition to the Pi. Which adds a bit of cost. Even a wifi stick.

    Totally agree, 100%.

I have this TV and its superb. RTE Player and 3Player are brilliant.

I think I paid just under £200 for it from Amazon.

How long ago did you pick up from Amazon?

I was going to go that route, but I had an impulse buy on Thursday. Couldn't wait on a delivery lol.

Also I have apps from the UK on mine now (BBC, ITV CH4/5 players) and have them all working no problem. These, coupled with YouTube and Netflix are seriously making me consider ditching the sky sub.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 865 ✭✭✭kazzer

I got it around 10 weeks ago.

I suppose you had to change the DNS settings in your router to download those UK players? I wonder is it possible to use both UK and Irish players? (without having to change DNS settings each time to go between the two)

I just use unblock us, and need to change TV's settings to the relevant locations.

Ie, Ireland to access RTE etc
    United kingdom for BBC
United states for hulu and America Netflix etc.

If you need advice, pm me.

You can have apps from multiple countries simultaneously but it involves installing a hack on the TV. See here:

Don't buy Samsung F series if you plan to hack it.
This works on an E-series Samsung Smart Television. As far as I know, it will not work on other models. Please don’t try this on a C, D or F series television.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,642 ✭✭✭dubrov

I can only confirm that it definitely works on the E series as I have it working.

There are reports that it works on the F series as well though.

    http://forum.samygo.tv/viewtopic.php?t=6277

Looks like more or less the same process.

Anyone that picked one of these up, did you get the remote to work with your sky hd box?

I'm struggling. I've the sky remote working with the TV, but this remote is supposedly a universal remote, I. E it should be able to operate sky hd, a bluray player, etc etc and the TV itself.

At the minute, it's not operating the sky box for me, I suppose I can operate everything using the sky remote, the only problem is that you won't be able to operate a few of the tvs 'smart' features via the sky hd remote.

I have the 32 inch model [presume they are set up the same] and have the remote working a HD box fine, did you get a little black sensor with the TV and if so did you plug that in to the back of the TV? Once thats done open the e manual go to getting started-controlling tv-universal remote set up-try now.

That will bring you through a menu where you have to enter your location and who your STB provider is etc.Once thats done it should work fine. Just make sure the sensor is located close to the sky box as thats where the remote control signal goes through.

Hope this helps, apologies if you have done all this already :)

I'm beginning to think that because I've the TV region set to UK (to avail of the UK apps, iplayer etc) it might somehow be impeding my attempt at setting it up correctly.

It keeps asking for a post code, and I keep putting in my parents in the north. Still won't work though.

I have all of the above set up like you though ... (I feel a day of tinkering coming up though)

For the effort required, it's just handier to change location to USA /UK when required.

Ah no, tis a minor inconvenience. I'll use sky remote for sky /volume change and powering of TV etc. Will revert to Tv remote when needing to use Netflix etc.

I think this TV is out of stock in loads of places now anyway.

Yeah we picked up a dodgy pair of lamps that had to be returned we were then told by the manager we had to return the 10€ voucher if we had already spent it they would have cut the refund by 10€

Off topic I know, but I want to buy a Samsung 32" Smart TV on Amazon and am wondering what the story is with regard to returning it to them if it is faulty? Surely it would cost a fortune to ship it back to the UK? Do they cover the whole thing or do they send you out a pre-paid postage sticker? Cheers.

Returning anything faulty to Amazon is always free, you print off a returns label from your account page,I think they even organize a courier to collect large items but not 100% sure on that :)

    Hi,

Sorry for hijacking this thread, I posted in the HE thread but got no reply so thought I might try here..
http://www.pcworld.ie/Product/SONY-BRAVIA-KDL32W653-Smart-32-LED-TV/314320/11.2.4 does anyone know anything about these tvs?
Is it easy to download from the app store? Can you hook an iphone/pc up to it? I googled a bit but read some contradicting statements so would love to know if anyone here has any experience.

Or what about this one http://www.currys.ie/Product/SAMSUNG-UE32F5500-Smart-32-LED-TV/318045/6.9.9
